As much as I hate to admit it 50' nearly always talks lot of sense.
I usually find myself agreeing with him

And in this thread he is spot on......:
Uses for salt, vinegar, brown sauce, mushy peas etc etc -

But - Don't forget the mint sauce on your mushy peas - very common - and very good - in the East Midlands
And I never went for the gravy or curry sauce

Although ketchup is good with chips sometimes - But never from the chippy
And if you are in France, Germany, or the Netherlands ....... as weird as it seems ....... I gotta say mayonnaise is good with chips too

And as a boy from Worcester - I gotta plug Worcestershire Sauce which is good with everything !!

Guess I'm a barbarian from the wild and wooly West. The only thing I like on fried foods (fish, fries, chicken, etc) is a little bit of salt and pepper.

Salt and vinegar on fish and chips, every time.  Mushy peas too. :tu:

If it's just chips then what goes with them really depends what kind of chips they are and what you're eating them with.  Skinny fries?  Mayo, salt and black pepper.  Chunky chips?  Curry sauce, or ketchup.  Sausage and chips?  Brown sauce.  Chinese chips?  Chinese curry sauce.  Ham egg and chips?  Mustard.

I'm hungry now.  :P

I think we need a thread on what, from time to time, makes MTO threads go of on Monty Python like derails...  :D

Er,Listy, don't you mean having a thread on threads that stay on the rails?

Having said that,do you do the Lister thing of having curry sauce on cornflakes?

There ain't many similarities between the original Lister and me, so no. But I do add so much pepper to some of soups they turn in to a dark pool of misery. I can feel the burn in my ears (probably eustachian tubes if I am more specific)...  :like:

Oh yeah I forgot about mushy peas. You can always tell the chippy's that put to much bicarb in the mushy peas when they froth from the vinegar

Apologies in advance for opening a can of worms.

What goes on the chips then? Just salt? Vinegar as well? Curry sauce? ....gravy?!
Careful now C-Sazzle  :D It's a geographical thing isn't it? For us who live dahn sarf, chips ent chips wivart salt 'n' vinegar, but I understand my Northern brethren enjoy curry sauce and/or gravy (hopefully not both at the same time). Even further North, I believe the Scotch (  :D ) like their chips battered and deep fried to accompany pizza/mars bar etc

 :like:

Personally, us Welsh (in my experience), like a combination of those things - tidy, isn't it. My favourite is chips with gravy - something my vegetarian girlfriend finds very grim.

Also, speaking of deep-friend confectionery - here in Cardiff we have a chip shop that does deep-fried Creme Eggs and Oreos  :-\

I had a blue raspberry one the last time I had fish and chips. I saw the machine behind the counter and thought to myself it had been years since I'd had one. I even paid the little extra for the bone shaped cup. They thought I was buying it for a child until I started drinking it while waiting for the cod to cook.  :D

It's funny, without even looking at the flags, you can almost plot a map of where people are from just by their fried food additions.
My condolences to the fella who has Heinz sauce.

I rotate meals, I only have fish and chips once every month or two. Sometimes substitute the fish for a sausage or chicken nuggets instead.
