Car boot sale find, my first _______ tool!
on: August 26, 2017, 02:51:58 PM
I've moaned before about the lack of multitool and sharp stuff in the car boot sales around here in Ireland. :-\

But now I've found something goood:ahhh
It beats the white scale Climber I found two years ago for €3.  :D

The plier head was rusted shut.
It took a literal WD-40 soaking and tedious forcing open and closing while clamped in a vise to loosen the plier head to the point I could open and close by hand with effort. Then some more wiggling to make it nice and loose.
Then a soap water wash, dry off, open, close, wipe up the rusty slush working it's way out of the plier head, etc.  :ahhh

Now it's nice and loose, clean, pretty and functional, despite the surface rust still present. I'll leave it like this for now.

I'm extremely pleased to have aquired a Leatherman, my first one, and for €2 at that! :o
I almost feel like I stole it, despite the entirely unusable condition it was in when I found it.
I'm surprised by how thin and slim it is when folded. :D

It's really fun to fiddle with.  :D

Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

Congrats on the great find for the price!

All you need is to touch up the blade and looks like you're good to go.

I was thinking about cutting off the blade.  :ahhh
Blades are technically not allowed around here for EDC purposes, and I'm quite fond of bladeless tools.

Bah! My parts bin has less useful stuff in than I thought. I have a file from a Wingman, but that'll take some work with a dremel or other power tools to get it to fit and let the tool close properly.

2 Euro was a steal in my mind, to me anything less than $20 for a Kick is.

Two pairs of Vise Grips work in a pinch if you don't have the proper wrenches.  I use fine steel wool to remove rust and it seems to work well unless it's decades of rust, in that case I grab the vinegar.   You'll also need a really coarse stone to rid the knife of those chips. That's one of the most badly chipped blades I've seen in my life, it almost looks like a serrated blade!

You can use vice grips to remove knurled screws.  There may be scratches left over and you'll need one for each side but its doable.  Can you reshape the blade into something else?  Anyway nice find and great work on getting it up to snuff.   As far as the residual rust, you can use sand paper of varying grits, I like wet or dry and use wet.

Some nicer pics in the sun, after removing some rust.

Should I try sanding the nooks and cannies of the plier head to remove more rust?

Yes. I'm not sure how Vinegar will effect the Zytel but a soak would be great.   You can take fine sand paper to sand the cutters, its a PITA ( pain in the arse ) to some but I quite enjoy the process and outcome.  I think for the hidden rust a well lubricated tool should be adequate ( 3in1 oil or similar ).

A dremel with cotton pollishing wheel and some polishing paste will do the trick

Great find :o Glad to see you now have a plier based tool :pok: :D

Hopefully the rust will come on off and you will have a nice tool :like:

So even a non locking blade isn't look well on  Maybe grind it into an awl  :D

You could just soak the pliers in some kind of rust remover.  Maybe reshape the blade into a marlin spike?  A very large awl would be neat.  I'm sure you'll figure out something cool to change it out for.

The can opener on this appears to cut as well as the Vic opener.  :ahhh
The metal "jags" it leaves behind on the rim of the can are very very small, and you won't cut your finger touching it.  :multi:

I turned the PE blade on my MP600 into a large awl. A Marlin spike would be cool as well  :tu:

A wire brush works pretty to remove rust. Along with some elbow grease. Do not be afraid to use it. The pliers surface are very durable.

Is that awl you've made legal carry or would they just consider it a small spiky blade?

If you are referring to the awl Steve made, then yes it is legal carry and he probably only did this because he was carrying another blade with him and it made that blade more useful with that combo :salute: :like:
