Floppy wobbly Wave handles (possible solution)
on: September 03, 2017, 05:20:30 PM
I have an 0704 Gen 2 Wave I got second hand, in good condition.  All tools are fairly loose and open nicely.  But what slightly bothered me was that when in closed position the handles would:

  • come apart noticeably (by weight of the other handle, under force of gravity);
  • move up/down in the other direction (i.e. there was some wobble in the handles  --- take the closed Wave by fingertips and thumb in both hands, each hand holding one side, instead of pulling apart to open, move one handle backwards and the other forwards to see the effect I am talking about);
  • and when in open position, there was some backward/forward wobble again

When I got a almost new second hand TTi there was no wobble --- and I put this down to it being a new tool and my Wave was just showing some age.

During a clean, when I took the Wave apart  completely, I noticed that the handles/frame is U-shaped in cross-section, and that the sides were not exactly parallel.  The U-shape was wider at top that bottom (of "the valley").  I wondered if this had happened over the years through torque on the frame from regular use.

I took my PS4 Squirt and squeezed hard (at least as hard as I dared, using a Squirt) at the top/open part of the frame (where the ruler markings are) near the pivot holes for the pliers-head.  A bit of trial and error with how much force was needed, and how many times I needed to do this, and I managed to move the top of the sides closer together.  Upon re-assembling I now have a Wave without the floppiness!

The blade and Vic scissors (modded in for the serrated balde) open one-handed.  The handles can still be 'flung' open one-handed.  And no more floppy wobbly Wave.   :tu:

YMMV, but I just wanted to put out this tip in case it proves useful for anyone else.   :cheers:
