Thanks @J2000E, I do have a built-from-parts 166.0324.  It's out for service right now, as my kiddo borrowed it and wore it to the climbing gym.  It came back, but wasn't running right.  :-/

I also have an original ca. 1967 165.024 which I don't loan out to the climbing enthusiasts of the family.  And a modern SM300 Heritage, and a cal. 2500 PO.  I love them all, but you can only wear one at a time.

Those are some nice watches! I did own a 165.024 for a short while, long ago, but someone gave me an offer I could not refuse... (had something else coming in). The put-together 0324 is a nice guilt free user and I am happy that your son gets to wear it.

Today it is a pre 1985 Explorer and a circa 1993-4 Explorer II.

Thanks!

No, it is not. The left position of the crown is a function of the Heuer/Buren/Breitling "un-holy alliance" to be a contender in the race for presenting the first automatic chronograph - in 1969. Very simply put - they chose the path of a semi modular construction, using already existing parts, and in that they had to put the automatic module the "wrong" way around. In advertising they spun the story so it seemed that - because the watch did not need to be wound up they put the crown to the left. An afterthought of course but a really good one.

Who were in the race for the first automatic chronograph? The contenders were Heuer/Buren/Breitling - Zenith and Seiko. It is still up to debate who won - but it is not really important today. They all presented their totally different solutions in 1969. Within months of each other. It was and is a triangle drama - Heuer (et al), Zenith or Seiko. I do not take a firm stand in this but consider the Zenith and Seiko integrated chronograph solutions more elegant. And the Heuer module solution cooler and often the reason of interest - as with your question - we are still discussing it all these years later  ;)

Being who and what I am I of course have versions of the 1969 auto-race trifecta. Not the absolute first versions but still.

Seiko:

Zenith

And the above Heuer

When Rolex finally felt they too had to have a automatic chronograph they chose the Zenith movement but took away the date and slowed its beat down - and some other modifications. I believe they "dumbed it down"...

I do like them too though - my batch of Zenith el Primero:

My photography skills aren't quite up to J2000E's, but here's a new watch I just received.  Pictured with it is my custom BYPX, which I carry daily.

The watch is a Sinn 613 St, a reboot of their older EZM-13 model.  It features a 60-min chronograph with central chronograph sweep seconds, and 500 m water resistance.  Quite the useful tool.

Congratulations on a great watch!

Sinn is actually one of my favourite tool watch brands. No nonsense watches and built to last. Whenever someone asks me for advise what to buy and if my questions turn out they need a real tool watch - I point them towards Sinn.

I used to have a GSG9.

The German GSG9 group actually wear them.

"I used to have a GSG9"... one evening while under the influence of alcohol I gave it to my brother. We sat and discussed what watch would withstand the rigors of him - my brother... and then even later he said "the only watch that you have that is anything to have is that black one (not knowing what it was)". So... I still get to see it but now on his wrist. He is 11 years older than me and he always sponsored me when I was young. I felt it was time to sponsor him back.

Today - Friday the 13: th - a 33 year old Sea-Dweller and a red X

Thanks, Myron.

Admittedly this was really low on the mod complexity scale, but something I'd been wanting to do for a while.

I've got a black Duro and a blue Duro. I love the blue dial, especially on a sunny day, but blue dial and blue bezel were a little too much blue. So I swapped the dial/movement assemblies to put the blue dial into the black Duro case and the black dial into the blue Duro case.

I really like the black bezel/blue dial combo that I was going for. The black bezel looks darker and the blue dial looks a deeper blue.

Today it is a Champion with new +scales and a SLA033 "Willard". SLA033 being the modern high end and limited edition tribute to the original 6105. The "Willard" moniker comes from Captain Willard using a 6105 in Apocalypse now movie.

This one needs a bump!

I went into my local leather store to pick up some adhesive, and left with a $180 water buffalo hide.  Holy crap, is this the strongest, burliest leather I have ever worked with, and not because it’s super thick.  Ever had a pair of water buffalo gloves?  I think it is truly indestructible.

Anyway, it is an exact match color-wise to Carhartt Duck.  Presenting the Carhartt strap!
