Before this argument discussion goes bad, I'd like to take it in a slightly different direction (but still calling upon the "fairness/reasonable" principle):

How many on here have purchased an MT for much less than the "going rate" ?

Commonly known as snapping up a bargain (in fact IIRC There is even a thread here on MTo dedicated to just such bargains).  And if you have, did you volunteer to pay more to give the seller closer to what it was worth ?

Over the years I have bought several such bargains on ebay, and have not paid the sellers any extra, as that is how a free market works -  sellers can ask for as high as or as low a price as they deem appropriate, and it is up to the prospective buyer to choose whether to buy or not.

Note that in my dealings with MTo members I do strive to be fair, and will offer more tools or a cash adjustment/higher price if I think it is needed to make the deal fair to both parties.

People can ask whatever they want for anything. They are allowed to, it's not illegal. Other people are also allowed to refuse to give them more than they think it's reasonable.

That's why professional athletes are paid like they are and art is sold/bought for the amounts we hear about.

It's all about freedom to choose and what you value.

Exactly. The seller wanted a certain amount, that sounded fair/enough for what he/she was selling. You were willing to pay that amount for the item. It's a win-win situation, both parties were fine with it.

Every time I think about getting a great deal, I remember a very specific segment on 'Antiques Roadshow', where a woman talks about acquiring a Daguerreotype (like a tintype photo) of Edgar Allan Poe.

I always kind of dream of finding a Japanese PST in a pawn shop one day. :D

If you don't have a JPST then PM me your postal address and I'll send you one as a late-Christmas RAK :)

We should only make fun of the seller for the high prices, not complain about him being greedy. If someone with a lot of cash buys it, and is happy with it, it is win-win for both.
