Do you start with O1 bar stock?

I recently found one 20mm K460 round bar for sale locally, very difficult steel to forge, either too hot or too cold, but I did get one blade forged.

Problem being when I started with the shaping I found out it had air hardened a bit, and now it's too hard for my files..... :facepalm:

Yes it has air hardend.   Its seems like a tuff steel to forge. 
Heat it to around 750 C and let it cool down  slowly.  Use sand, vermaculit or some isolation material to put it in.
Then it should be soft. But that steel  looks hard to grind and fil.

Thanks Seved, I was given the same advice elsewhere, heat to sub-critical and allow to cool slowly, tried it this weekend and not much luck.....might be a bit softer but still too hard for the files.  :salute:

Also burnt a piece of 52100 in half........at least I forged a halfway good start to  a blade from the front half of an old Nicholson file.
