Windows 10...
on: February 04, 2018, 03:36:52 PM
Currently really hating Windows 10. I have had issues with Windows 10 since I went brain dead and took Microsoft up on their free offer of upgrading Windows 8 to the latest and greatest. The initial install went ok, as well as a few updates. That didn't last very long however. Microsoft attempted to update my computer which made my computer crash repeatedly. Thankfully, my computer would crash a few times, and then it would automatically revert itself to my prior version which did work. The issue however, is that Windows 10 and Microsoft continually tried to install the freaking bad update. this cat and mouse went on for many months, where I would defray the pain and suffering until the operating system became more authoritarian, forcing me to install it eventually against my will as I couldn't push the freaking operation further into the future. This of course would bring another round of stupidity as my computer would throw up all over the place until it would automatically retrieve the older working version.

Well things changed last night. I fell asleep and the freaking computer did another one of those idiotic updates. It of course balked as it always did. When I woke up, I noticed my computer screen was black. I sleepily turned the computer off and went to bed. This morning, when I turned on my computer it wouldn't even boot. It kept looping.

I absolutely hate Windows 10. Worst OS ever!

Well, now things get interesting. I had downloaded a recovery option for USB a few months ago as insurance. When I tried to access the files off USB it simply wouldn't work. Eventually I figured out that I had to activate boot from USB in the BIOS. This got me further. When I booted from the USB, I tried to repair the OS with not luck. I eventually attempted an install, and noted that I didn't have enough room on my SSD boot drive. That necessitated a reformat, which allowed me to finally access the USB recovery file, which allowed me to reinstall Windows 10..argh.

Now, I do not like Bing as a search engine...and oddly enough every-time I tried to install anything from online, I would get a Bing.com is currently not working. I was able to source a Chrome install from another source (my laptop) and transfer that via USB drive. I eliminated Bing and Microsoft EDGE..what a joke those are...and get back into Chrome, which now allowed me to install drivers, etc from the net.

I just finished re-installing STEAM, and noted some issues with Titan Quest Anniversary Edition. Figured I should erase my whole STEAM folder on my D: drive and re-install STEAM in a new folder, and to re-install the game as it didn't work at all. So the fun continues. I am certain eventually, I will get my PC back into shape.

My biggest fear is the next update. I haven't checked this new install to see if I am even current...or will the pain and suffering continue. If it does, I will be looking into finding a copy of Windows 8 or 7, or anything in the near future!

Anyone else having a lot of fun with these Microsoft auto updates or with Windows 10 in general?

Yes I've been screwed a couple of times now, the last update resulted in a blue screen can not reboot which resulted in me having to do a complete reinstall  :twak:

Just managed to get my steam issues all sorted out. I deleted my old steam folder and re-installed steam. Then I also installed new Nvidia graphic drivers...that fixed the issue. On top of that, I am now running the most current Windows 10 version. Maybe I won't be having anymore upgrade issues in the future.

I missed that thread the first time around. Yes, looks like I am not in the minority it seems. Hopefully from this point forward, everything will be an improvement.

I managed to recover my brother in law's machine from a win10 BSOD loop. It's not for the faint at heart. Several failed attempts and then I finally got lucky on one.

Nothing major was lost and he was back to normal in a couple days (actually shorter, but he was away for the weekend, so it wasn't until Monday when he got his machine back).

If you are uncomfortable with the auto updates, there are guides on disabling it, just remember that you're also potentially leaving it open to flaws if you don't stay on top of it.

Our laptop runs 10, and while it's not my favourite, it's better than I recall 8 was. Wife's machine is also on 10, but mainly because the broadcast software we use needs windows :/

I'm 99% of the time on Ubuntu (actually xubuntu), and boot my win10 partition once every 2-3 months to update

When Microsoft handed out free Window 10 updates, I installed it on a Windows 8 machine. Possibly this caused my headaches. Maybe with this clean install any co-inhabiting issues are eliminated.

I use a Mac for desktop but have a Windows 10 phone.  It's good for it's blueberry-like business stuff which I don't use at awl, but it doesn't support a crazy number of really popular apps

I was again very impressed by Win 10 on Friday, HQ rolled out drive encryption software to a laptop which failed and put it in a BSOD loop.

Did the "reset" thing and only needed to re-install Office and the other apps.......the main reason why this is a chill Monday morning

I want my next phone to be a Windows one because I'm trying to un-Google my life but yeah the lack of apps is an issue (caused by lack of popularity I guess).

I hate everything Microsoft. I switched to Linux mint. Never needed to swear as much in my entire life as I do now. But I am not going back. Better to reign in hell than to serve in heaven!  :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh

I was told by the microsoft tech that a clean win10 install should be more stable than upgrading from win 8.

We shall see  :-\

yeah that's always the case, it's not a windows 10 only thing, windows has always worked better as a clean install vs an upgraded install.

True, I image my hard drives and wipe and re-install about every 12 months. I have very few problems.

Running Win 10 on 2 machines since Win 10 was released. No problems at all.

I'm an IT Consultant and don't let any of my clients use Windows 10 (or Server 2016).  Windows 7 Pro is the last stable version.

also considering the usual MS trend of one abomination, one solid release, 10 should have been an ok one...

I'm also an IT guy. We are on Windows 7 Pro for now, but support for enterprise versions ends January 2020. We are preparing now, so I've upgraded our deployment console to be compatible with Windows 10 imaging but all my Windows 10 builds have issues updating. They loop, they brick, and at best they  complain. Sure hope they iron this crap out soon. My boss insists on testing a good image in a few weeks.

Windows 10 is inevitable as Microsoft moves from a software company to a service company and I will make the change when I have to.  Some of my clients have bought Windows 10 computers against my advise, and they make up a disproportionate amount of my service calls.
