Homemade birthday gift
on: March 03, 2018, 10:22:59 PM
So, I currently have two daughters and the youngest turns 3 tomorrow and the oldest turns 5 in a few weeks.

They've been watching the Moana cartoon obsessively for awhile and have costumes (made by grandma). One thing they didn't have was the necklace Moana wears, so I decided to try to make them each one for their birthdays.

In the movie, the necklace is a locket that has "the heart of te fiti" inside. See the Pic attached.

I have no idea how to make a locket, so I took a simple route. I started by smashing some 90% silver half dollars in my rolling mill, one for each half of each necklace.

Next, I used my hobby bench grinder to remove the milling from the edges. As I work them later, the milling creates stress risers where the work hardened silver can split. Best to remove them now.

Then, I hit each one with a torch to anneal and soften them

Then, I use letter punches to add their name and birthday to each one. Hard to see in the pic, but its there

Now, the real fun begins.

I clamped one of my dapping block things (the name escapes me at the moment) in my bench vise, then used my brass mallet to shape them.

After lots of shaping and trial fit checking to see if each half matches close enough to the other, I then sanded down the edges and went over each one with 0000 steel wool.

Once that was done, I drilled holes in each one for the jump rings that will attach them to the necklace cord. No pic

After that, I made the jump rings. I have some heavy gage square copper wire that I use for this. I wrap it around a round object of the appropriate size, in this case a nut driver.

Then, I use a jewelers saw to cut through the overlap part. This leave nice square edges and makes a quick clean job of doing jump rings.

Then I use the jump rings to connect each half of the locket together and permanently close the jump rings using silver solder

At this point, I was in a rush and forgot to take some pics. Basically, I took fresh water pearls (like the kind you get by the 100 at a hobby store), and drilled out their holes to a larger diameter to accept the cord.

Then I tied some knots to try to match the Moana necklace and put everything together.

This is where I have to stop for today. I need to figure out what to use for the heart of te fiti that goes inside. Once I do that, I plan to use small rare earth magnets epoxied down to either hold the halves of the locket closed, or to hold the heart inside. We'll see.

As great as the gift is going to be to the girls now, imagine how they are going to feel in a dozen or so years when you show them this thread!   :tu:

You do great work man, and thanks for taking us through the process!

Thanks, boss!

I try to get them involved in other projects and they both seem to really enjoy using all the different tools and trying to make or fix things. Hopefully future MTO members in the making.  :multi:

My wife has finished painting and these are now ready to give at tomorrow's birthday party.

Compared to the movie screen shot in the first post, I think she did a great job matching the design.

Another project done!
