Remove rust from pocket knife?
on: March 04, 2018, 09:50:18 PM
I have my great grandfathers pocket knife with pearl scales and his name ingraved, it's made by EKA knives Eskilstuna in Sweden (I am a swede).
However, it's a bit rusty, and it's rusty in every nook and crannie, which make it hard to remove. I would like to restore it, not to use it, but to make it beautiful again.

Any tips on removing rust without damaging the scales?

Weird,  your pic keeps disappearing

I've had luck with WD40 and fine emery paper and a brass wire toothbrush type brush.

You can put the sandpaper over something thin and flat like a small metal ruler to help get inside the knife.

Clean up with clean oil soaked rags.

I have had great luck with Coca-Cola (submerging over night) and using baking soda to remove any rust left over, but I have no idea how this would effect the scales and given that it is very sentimental I probably would not go that route.

The first thing (mildest) I would try is a pen ink eraser  ;)
You can cut one up to get in to small places but avoid the scales  :tu:

Added, use a light oil on the clean steel immediately after cleaning

I've heard great things about the "rust eraser". Also you could try Flitz. Hope it helps, great heirloom.

I use rust erasers quite often :tu: Just small blocks of rubber with sandpaper like grits in them :tu: They work great for a lot of metals but not sure about those scales :ahhh hope you can get it restored though because it is a very nice looking knife and the sentimental factor of it makes it even more special :like: :like:

I think that is really cool that you have your great grandfather's knife.

I bought this one a few weeks ago but have not tried it out yet

I still think you should try an ink pen eraser (there's probably one in the back of 'that' drawer in the kitchen  ;):tu:
