Cobra Kai on Youtube Red
on: May 28, 2018, 12:43:56 PM
Is anyone else watching Cobra Kai?  If you haven't heard of it, it's the original Karate kid but 30 years later.  Daniel LaRusso has moved on in life and become a very successful car dealer while the blond pretty boy Johnny is an unemployed alcoholic who decided to revive the Cobra Kai Dojo, much to the dismay of Daniel.  The show follows Johnny as he rebuilds Cobra Kai from scratch, and I have to say that I haven't gotten into a show this much in a long time.

It stars the original people (where appropriate) and introduces some new characters that are very organic to the storyline.  It is really cool to see Ralph Macchio come back and do katas, just like Mr. Miyagi taught him so many years ago.  Paint da fence, wax on, wax off and all!  :D

Brilliant show and I am really enjoying it.  I think I am on episode 8 and I am hooked!

I watched the first 2 and I like it, but can't decide whether I want to subscribe for the rest of it.

If you liked the next 6 Def, I should probably go for it.  :tu:

Wish Pat Morita was still around, loved that guy.

Solving problems you didn't know you had in the most obscure way possible

"And now, it's time to hand this over to our tame race axe driver. Some say, he can live in the forest for six months at a time without food, and he knows of a secret tribe of only women where he is their God. All we know is, he's call the Styx!" - TazzieRob

I agree.  There are a number of flashbacks that show Pat Morita which was great, and many more references to him.  The best thing about Pat Morita is everyone remembers him as the grumpy old Japanese man, but no one seems to know that before Karate Kid he was a stand up comedian who really doesn't have an accent in the slightest!

As for the subscription.... well... I would have considered paying for it, but the service isn't available in Canada, so I am "forced" to watch it with Showbox.  :D

Good to hear it's worth a watch.  I saw the trailer and while it looked like it might be good I didn't want to get my hopes up.

Actually....

Without giving anything away, I think it is brilliant.  It is well written and fairly intricate, but still easy to follow.  It is a continuation of the existing story we all know and love, but it isn't a carbon copy of it, nor is it just a repackaging of an 80's movie.  It's not a Star Trek: The Next Generation sort of thing where there is little to connect it with the original, but I feel like it could easily work on it's own as well.

It's hard to explain without sounding like TV Guide, but for me at least, it is exactly what I would have wanted from a series.  Honestly, the only concern I have about it, is how long they can keep hitting the nail as perfectly on the head as they are?

When the first movie came out I remembered Pat Morita as playing Arnold the drive in owner from the Happy Days series, a comedic part. He was a good actor to go from that type of role to Mr. Miyagi, not to say Mr. Miyagi wasn't pretty funny at times too! :)
