Melon Farmer
on: July 19, 2018, 10:45:49 AM
Recently bought an old bike.

The day I picked the bike up had some drama and my head was elsewhere.
Gave it a quick once over and noted a couple small things but no big issues so completed the purchase.

Was removing the stickers from the forks today when I looked upwards and...

Not sure how but I had totally missed seeing it when it mattered.

This week had already been pretty brutal.
And now this.

Soooo gutted right about now.

Sigh.

I'm assuming thats a crack in the frame where the seat sticks in?
Bummer. :-\
Is it possible to fix by welding or cable ties or something?

EDIT: Handlebars, not seat.  I seat it now.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

Alu welding is a possibility but I don't have TIG skills nor can I afford right now to pay someone else to do it.

Alu 7005 T6.

If you can find someone to weld it at least it won't need heat treating.  What kind of bike is it?  I like the colour. :tu:

Could you get a hose clamp around that for a quick ghetto mcgyver repair?

A friend of mine had his bike frame welded. If I remember right he had some problem finding a welder that could do it. Though It was not all that pricey in the end if I remember correctly.

so blondy also caught up  I'll probably use that.......

I once had a fork collapse with me standing up and going pretty fast, I was 17, will never forget that fall, still think I was incredibly lucky......longer before safety helmets.

I will never again break my arse of any other body part on one of those wheeled monstrosities

I've had alu cracks on frames before. Had it welded and it held. Still a royal pain.

What did you do to repair it ?     Don't think I'd be doing any high speed downhills with a crack like that in the head tube .

It got welded. Not the best job but that happens. Crossing all fingers that it will hold.
The unfunny thing is next month I have a race with an extremely dangerous and long downhill leg.
So yeah, I am scared.

Yeah well my choice is: bike one solid frame but rim brakes, bike two disc brakes but repaired frame.

Yeah. I'm thinking there must be a third choice.......

Something like: a big glass of iced tea and a good burrito with guacamole..........

I had rim brakes for over 40 years before I got my first bike with disk brakes. The only problems I ever had occurred in wet weather conditions, wet rim brakes don´t do very well.
