Has anyone ever managed to ...
on: August 24, 2018, 02:15:57 PM
Read about many of Leatherman tools getting broke, even experienced a few myself.

Broke a Crunch when breaking through a steel link ... and it felt like holding a stack of crackers and crunching them down. Was rather let down when that happened, as I carried it for many years. Got a replacement, but the pliers on the replacement never stay closed when folding or unfolding. The first one had no issues like that.
And then the other evening was riding the Rover through some low hanging trees and one caught the collapsible flag I had on, and the tree ripped the shock cord. This flag has reflective surfaces on it and needed it for the ride home. So grabbed the Skeletool CX out, went to crimp the aluminum coupler - and SNAP! :ahhh The pliers snapped right at the pivot mass. Took some time to find the where the pliers jaw went.

Don't worry, that is not rust, just weird lighting indoors.

What little I was able to crimp down got me home. Then was thinking what tool to carry with me on the rec-trike. I carry a bit kit so would want something that could use a large bit driver. That left the Rebar out of the equation. Thought maybe carry the Wave, but I keep that in the car. Was running out of tools, so grabbed that heavy Surge (v1.0) - but that thing is so huge it bulges the tool kit.
However, I was able to really lean into it and seriously clamp down on that thick coupler to mash over the fiberglass rod, and that upper flag portion isn't going anywhere now. Will have to seek a replacement rod in the future.

But that got me to thinking. I've broke PST a few times, rarely ever the pliers 'cept the tips of the needle points or some inside tool, and a few other tools. However, that Surge, I've never managed to break it, and had the Crunch way longer than the Surge. I do not EDC that Surge cause it is like a pound of weight there on the belt, and I like my pants over my hips. Tried to EDC is a few times, mostly around the time I first got it. Have since wished it was more the size of a Charge model...  :D
I even cut a nail with it like in some videos, with the foot, and this thing is impervious to torture!

So the question is: Has anyone ever managed to break a Surge multitool? And if so, what were you doing to cause THAT BEAST to break??

EDIT:

Personally; I always have a pair of vise-grips, an adjustable spanner and socket set in my car, for exactly cases like the one you described.

Well maybe always having those in my car are  also partly side affects of having owned a Land Rover.....where you often drive out ......and later find yourself walking back home.....Land Rover ownership in a nutshell

Took a photo from a different aspect. Yup, it snapped at the worst possible area.   I feel bad when my multitools get broken.

Think when the Crunch broke I was like devastated on the spot, as I would of never thought it would of broke

The scissor spring tang won't engage after I dropped my Surge off of a 12' ladder last week. It landed directly on the pivot at the scissor side. The scissors lock open, but the independent spring won't engage anymore. The pivot isn't bent, so I am a little confused as to why it is behaving that way. I haven't taken it apart yet to see what happened, but I'll probably send it in for repair, since I have no shortage of tools.

Exactly what happened to mine though I don't remember dropping it!!
Just sent it in and it was replaced no problem although I preferred the older plier head with the fine serrations!

Thank you for replying, Jaypeebee!

Now I'm ultra curious as to why the scissors would do that. :ahhh

I'm guessing a dimple in either the scissor pivot or the spring pivot that got mashed when I dropped it, and in your case, wore out from use maybe?.

Check the screw--I noticed my Surge's scissor spring won't engage, and found out it was because the screw loosened due the the BO coating wearing in that area.   I've got to get some replacement security Torx bits of the right size--I lose or break those every time I use them.

It wasn't from over use, I hadn't used the scissors very often!
I didn't bother investigating, just sent it back because I'd broken the Awl off as well

So felt brave during a bought of insomnia. Took the pivot apart and discovered my theory was close to what happened. The drop broke the tiny engagement pin off of the scissor spring on the inner area. You can see the little piece right above the spring in the first photo. Used a cut off piece of a strong safety pin to make a new piece to put in the tiny hole. Slapped the Surge pivot back together and everything seems to operate properly. $8 shipping charge avoided. :woohoo:

On a side note: Used my ole' blunt modded ST200 to cut the pin and file it. I forgot how much I liked the ST200BN. :ahhh

I've never managed to break one like that, but my family members sure have.

I've carried individual Leatherman tools for years at a time, and I've only broken two that I felt shouldn't have broken(the other few were my fault!).  I snapped a Wave blade once, and I broke the tip of the small flathead on my Blast about 10 years ago.  Both of those should not have happened and LM warrantied them both times.

My current EDC Rebar has been through absolute hell and back, with nary a scratch to show for it.  Ok, it's scratched all to hell but it is still complete and functioning.  I've put more pressure on the pliers than a cast plier head should be able to take.  I've pried with the drivers like we all do, and they're still there.
