Reading thru threads of some member getting hurt and suffering injury as a result of activities is a bummer.  Heck reading about the boss and his ankle injuries really sucked.    Some of you are waking up with aches that you didn't have years ago.  Yeah, you know who you are  :pok:.  Some of you woke with aches only after simple weekend chores.  Come on, fess up.

We are getting older y'all.  Its ok, really, it is.  I see it as a blessing to be this age.  One heck of a ride so far.  Sure there are things I wont do any longer but I don't miss them.  I was an avid ball player.  Basketball was a religion in my family at one time.  We all ball'd.  I threw in the towel many moons ago.  Too many knee injuries witnessed with long lasting problems.  ACL, MCL, feet, finger, you name it.  Those that suffered such injuries still feel the pains and live with restrictions.  I rode dirt bikes, street bikes and anything with 2 wheels.  I went hard all the time when on them.  Seen some spectacular crashes and some brutal injuries.  I had a spectacular crash in the early 90's.  Walked away but with some residual effects.  I think there are some things I am experiencing now as a result.

I dont lament about the things I no longer chose to do as I age.  I also never went thru a mid life crisis where I felt the drive to go crazy and do such things.  I'm thankful I am not living with the pains and limiting effect of my youth.  I enjoy quite a lot but I know my limits and weigh out the potent for injury unlike when I was a much younger man.

Are there things any of you are considering no longer doing as you age?  Are there something you've decided you slow down on?  Maybe go less hard or pick up less hardcore activities?  Maybe its still worth it to you and theres no way you stop till the reaper calls your ticket number.

I've definitely slowed down a bit.

...but just a bit.  :D

And I pay more severely for my mistakes. When I was in my twenties, injuries seemed to last twenty minutes, now they last twenty days.

I'm walking with an AirCast boot on, using a cane right now. It doesn't bother me as long as I keep busy. The only thing slowed down is my walking. Everything else is normal-ish. :)

Only one more month or two of it though, so I'm lucky. The rupture in the Achilles tendon is healing well, and Doc says probably no surgery this time. :woohoo:

My mind tells me I can and while I'm still fit my body agrees, my recovery is a lot slower than yesteryear unfortunately.  This is not a mental thing.  Its not about growing up or enjoying life.  Its about paying dearly later.  I've seen some guys who went hard all their lives.  Now in their later years,  Oh boy.  I'm certainly not saying hang it all up.  Heck I'm not suggesting anything other than asking if you are considering the payment you will pay later down the road.

Tolls will be collected.  Thats for sure.  The older you get they will be collected.

With many members getting injured/hurt, it looks like there might be a market for MT.o branded medical gear. :multi:

I quit riding motorcycles years ago. I quit riding racing bicycles a bit later. Too many accidents with painful results, some of them lasting. Otherwise, I don´t feel much older than 30 years ago.

I've been struggling to read the specs on e.g. a laptop AC adapter, so with my looming redundancy which will leave me without medical aid, I went last week and had my eyes tested.....

End result blew me away.....

At distance I can read 100% at 1.5x and 80-90% at 2.0x, which is exceptional apparently.

Close up I'm at 0.75, so not even ready for reading glasses yet.

As for the rest, 43, larger than average and I'm feeling the years.

After the doc fixed my left knee he told me I'd feel it in cold & wet conditions, and it was funny to realize that the same is true for all the major operations I've had through the years.

When I manage to get away to the coast it always bothers me the first day.....followed by realization, then acceptance.

The long distance hikes also taught me you can walk through a lot of pain, and on our hiking trails 99% of the time you'll find school kids or older people.....

In my head I still feel 25, in my body, well sometimes I feel every bit of my 65 years.

I have learnt to listen to my body (& my doctors, massesuse and chiropractor).  I pace myself a lot more these days, and use more power tools and bend over less where possible/practical.  Two recent tool purchases have helped my body a lot - a kinetic log splitter and a chop saw for kindling (on instruction from my chiropractor & my missus).  I also try to organise repetitive tasks to reduce bending, twisting and carrying.  I use a trolley and plastic bins/tubs to move anything not light around the yard, as carrying heavy stuff makes my back stiff.

That way I can keep doing most of the things I want to, and I want to keep running my dogs in dog agility as long as I can.  I gave up other sports years ago when the recovery time became longer than the interval between matches ( I played competitive basketball into my mid forties)

My missus often reminds me that you only get one body and the spare parts situation is less than ideal, so try to look after the one you have.

Well stated!
The realization and acceptance is the hardest part for me sometimes. Especially at 32yo, knowing I can't do a lot of the things someone my age would do can be difficult. Bit, I generally find that channeling the activities I can't do, into activities I can do helps a lot.

In my head I still feel 25, in my body, well sometimes I feel every bit of my 65 years.

A lot of this should be taken seriously by people at any age. Since I was a kid, I always knew, just because you CAN do something doesn't necessarily mean one should do something. Weighing any possible negatives and positives is always important.
I have a neighbor that used to run several miles a day and run marathons for fourty years. He is in his early 60s now and stuck using a mobitility scooter to get around. His knees, ankles, hips, and back are all deteriorated. And I am not saying this will be the case for everyone, but modulating physical activity is important. We always need to remember that we're going to have the same body for as long as we live. Better look after it now, instead of having to deal with more than you have to, when you're older. :)

I wish this boot could do something aside from make my knees hurt.

Although, it does have dual zone inflatable air sacks to adjust to the shape of the ankle. I guess that is Ironman enough for me.  :multi:

The Achilles tendon is the third ruptured tebdon I've had since early 2015. A tendon in my calf ruptured, which not much can be done, since it doesn't cause a lot of issues (aside from limiting physical activities like running, jumping, etc.).
The second was my right-arm distal bicep tendon. That one was a full tear and required multiple surgeries. After surgery and rehab, it still tore again. So, the last surgery was to remove the tendon and part of the bicep. Oddly enough, I've managed to get to lifting 30lbs with the arm, without a bicep to help, which is cool.
Then, one day I'm taking photos in the yard and a bee was hanging around my face, so I stood up quickly and something felt like I got hit in the left leg with a bat or something.  The Achillles tendon ruptured.
Now, I've been walking around in that stupid boot for months, and will be another month or two. Fortunately, since the rupture wasn't full, the Doc thinks I can avoid surgery. But, I'll have to be even less physically active than I was before.
Oh well, so is life. I just can't wait to be out of that boot and off of a cane. :woohoo:

Have you tried motorcycle boots? They have plenty of ankle support but are not that constrictive.

Thanks for the suggestion, man!

Unfortunately, until the tendon heals, the whole idea is to remove the possibility of moving the tendon. But, that is a good idea for after it heals. Maybe it will help prevent that from happening again while doing light hiking or something. :)

Funny abotu this thread, talking about slowing down as you get older....

Gravity has taken some good shots at me, and so have kinetic energy, car wrecks, bar fights, dog bites and a lot of other things, and I'm still here.  When I was younger I concentrated on working, working and more working, often working two or three jobs at once.  I would often leave one job, take a nap for a couple of hours and go to my next job, and I did that seven days a week for many years.  I didn't do what I should have done when I was young, and as none of the jobs paid that well and I lived in one of the most expensive cities in Canada, I have little to show for it.

Now I'm 43 and it seems like just a few weeks ago I was 25, and I have done very little of what I wanted to do in life.  Maybe it's a mid life crisis- the convertible Jeep and young girlfriend would probably confirm that fact, but I have been working towards doing more and more of the things I want to do these days, and, ankle problems notwithstanding, I have been looking online at some pretty major hikes.  They will hurt like hell to do, and they will take longer for me to do than most people, but that just makes me want to do them even more.

You only get one life, and there's no deposit to get back when you return your body in good condition when you are done, so might as well use it while you still can.  There are lots of healthy people in retirement homes unable to do much, so if my ticket get's punched before that, I'm ok with it.

Just remember that Megadeth's A Tout Le Monde needs to be played at my funeral, and if I have any organs worth harvesting to help someone else, feel free to part me out like an old Chevy.  MTO members get first crack, and ten lucky winners will receive genuine Uncle Def ankle screws.   :ahhh

Dude, from a fellow '75 model........you're killing it!

I'm a '74 model actually, just produced late on the year.  :D

:ahhh

I look at this in another way. Often people blame their injuries and other physical limitations on old age whereas often it is just something that stopped functioning properly and never got fixed.
eg: We see an old person with a hunched back and say to ourselves that's what happens when you get older. No, that's what happens when we don't fix things that are malfunctioning when we are younger.

My advise to all of you, would be DON'T WAIT!

There's things I hoped to do one day, that now I can't, and most likely never will. You never know when you might lose an ability you currently take for granted. Seize the moment, and don't put things off till it's too late. Sometimes you remain able to do things well into your later years, but not always. Take nothing for granted, when it's gone, it's gone, so take advantage of it while it's there  :tu:
