Great last minute effort team. Goodnight one and all.  Sleep well and sweet dreams.

We all like a good natter. Who prefers the olden days when you could get a bag of SAK's for sixpence and still have change for a bovril and rhubarb and custard and a tuppenny ride on the donkeys? And the youtubes weren't filming everything.  But we were happy.

Post your olden day stories here.  Extra points if they include playing on bomb sites, slicking back your hair with butter like Elvis Presleys or grandma drawing brown lines on her legs to look like stockings.

Not quite that old, but I can remember when gas was 25 cents a gallon and I was my Dad's remote control for the three channels we had on TV.

I remember reading a “Horrible histories” book about the WW2 British Blitz. It mentions some of those things like drawing pretend stockings on your legs.

Remember the good ole days when fruit pickers could afford to buy houses and apartments?

I can remember biking out to 'the dump' of our village where we would scavenge anything interesting.
Catching tadpoles in the local ponds and bringing them home to die in jars.
Rolling around laughing when Mum pulled out a crank handle to start the Morris Minor Van.

Granddad has talked also about “the dump”.
And collecting glass bottles.
Fruit picking.
Buying sweeties and going to the cinema.
Living with your ma, da and siblings in a two bedroom house.
Breaking limbs in various playtime accidents.
Cycling lots.
Falling in the canal.

The olden days seem... interesting.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

I too was Dad's remote - knob on the right for the channels (like you said, three of them), knob on the left for volume... or was it the other way about?

RCA console TV.  Channel, volume and vertical were on the right.  We used pliers to change the channel.

The first phone I remember had rotary dials. We thought we were stylin when we got our first push button phone.  It was still corded of course.

There were more radios, and vinyl records, 8 track tapes replaced by cassette tapes, replaced by CD, replaced by digital download.

What do you call the big speaker on the thing that plays vinyl records?

Victrola? Before my time.  There was also Edison phonographs which were earlier and they played wax and vinyl cylinders.

I looked Victrola up. That lead me to “phonograph” on Wikipedia. And the terminology section simply calls the bit I was asking about a “loadspeaker”

RCA Victor and several other companies worldwide use the dog and gramophone image.  The original dog was named Nipper.

Casting my mind back to approximately 60 years ago I have a vague memory of borrowing a record player from our (richer than us) neighbours, and using a thorn from a bush as the needle.  But I was very young at the time so I might be mis-remembering.  I'm sure we didn't have a TV then (there wasn't any local TV transmissions until years later).
