Still kicking
on: September 23, 2018, 12:21:48 AM
For those of you that haven't heard, we had at least two tornadoes touch down within a couple of miles of me yesterday.

Megan and I are fine, although our power went out last night and we aren't expected to get it back for a couple of days.  I have fired up my old Honda Generator (more on that when the lights come on!) And the camp stoves have been earning their keep!

We aren't too bad off, and have been letting our neighbors charge phones and things too.

If I'm not online much for the next couple of days, that will be why!

I'd live to hear from JP and Toolslinger and any others in the area to see if they are ok!

Checking in.

We dodged the worst of it. Lights flickered for a bit but didn’t go out.

I have a cousin here in town who lost his roof last night.  Fortunately they are in Costa Rica right now so it isn't affecting them too much.

I heard that the power company here is very short staffed as they had sent a bunch of their people to help restore power in areas affected by Hurricane Florence.

Still, those buggers have to be working their butts off here!  As I understand it a whole power station got taken out.

I heard 6 in hospital...which considering what I have seen in videos and photos...is amazing.

Glade to hear both of you are ok.  :salute:

JP here.

We didn't get any damage to our place. The power has been out since Friday afternoon and is due back on Sunday evening.

All is well and we got places to go.

Lots of batteries, flashlights, candles and the such too. It was a beautiful day today.

Thanks again to the boss for checking in. This is a great community and MTO is more than a forum.

I'm glad you're all OK.  Don't forget to change the oil in your Generator every 2 days or so of use.  It's recommended every 36 hours for most generators.  I keep a case of 30 weight around for mine at all times.

I've got to pick up more oil today for it.  It ran like a champ for about two and a half hours last night, for the first time in probably a decade.  No idea how old the oil is but I imagine it's not the freshest.

Glad to hear you are ok and didn't suffer any damage.  We went to the Carp Fair yesterday for something to do and I was wondering how you'd made out as we passed through Kanata.

If you need a hand with anything, give me a call at 902 233-8888 and I'll be happy to do what I can.

We are out delivering food for elderly and disabled people right now.  Our power may be back on shortly but if it isn't I am heading home and firing up the generator on the front porch for any neighbors that need it.

I have a neighbor with a giant generator that is running day and night and he doesn't seem to be helping anyone else.

We just delivered a large pile of soup to a low income building and now we are grabbing lunch before heading home and firing up our generator for our neighbors to charge their phones.

I laughed at the "building up Karma".

Our power is due up tomorrow night.

Our freezer is holding cold but all the leftovers that I should have had for lunch will get tossed from the fridge.

We have written off everything in the fridge as well, although the fridge freezer and deep freeze downstairs are doing well.  We went to a local store yesterday and bought big bags of ice to keep in them and that seems to be doing the trick.

Slick, we took those shoebox size tote boxes and packed them full of snow each morning two in the freezer and one in the fridge, to keep the food good, the other freezer forget it, that had so much ice build up on it but it was also outside on the porch, during the night it was in the 30’s yet during the day it was up to 60, so great for us keeping warm during daytime but bad for the fridge/freezer, yet come nighttime bad for us, great for the fridge/freezer, we ended up setting up camp in the living room and our bedroom since they were next to each other, kids slept in the living room, and just before bed running the mini propane heater to get the place warm then turning it off and get under the covers, needless to say the bathroom you could see your breath, brrr, bad part was if you needed to warm your hands you let the heat come out of the toilet bowl.. taking a shower was worst, opened the window to let warmer air in, but still only 50-60° water, needless to say those were very quick showers brrr! Yet finally half the state got power after 4days, it took another 4-6 days for the rest of the state, the kids couldn’t go back to school because they had to get the snow off the roof, so the kids were out for like 2weeks, and they even canceled halloween.. such a great year!

Power was restored at 2230hrs on Sunday night!

It went out around 1800hrs on Friday so that's what, 52 hours without power?  Not too bad....

Now that I have power again I am hoping my service provider can get my DSL connection back online so I can stop chewing my way through my mobile data plan!   :ahhh
