A very proud father!
on: November 10, 2018, 03:10:04 AM
Well, today it’s official,

A while back I posted about our older kid wanting to go into service, he didn’t know which or what to do, one branch wouldn’t take him because of tattoos, another he had to cut weight, then again, then again, so he got tired of them. Then he got a girlfriend which changed everything! But after 5mnths of misery and arguments he grew a set and kicked her O-U-T! And now after feeling his freedom once again he wanted to stretch his legs a little further, last week he went and spoke to a recruit, and they worked with him, yesterday he had to go up for testing (mental) where he stayed the night to be awoken @4:30 to start the physical testing, needless to say he passed and got the NAVY’s stamp of approval! He’s teetering between a machinist and mechanic, but leaning to mechanic, either way he’s been official swarm in and won’t be kicked off to boot camp until some time in feb-March, so he’s got time to spend with family for the holidays and to tie up any loose ends.. anyway mom and I are very proud of him, she’s a little scared and I caught her letting the tears flow when she got the text of him passing, but she’s more proud then anything especially since her father was in the navy, me on the other hand am very proud, but also mad because I didn’t get my t-shirt! :wait:

:like: I hope he does well during his service and his life. Happy to see another person sign up and take advantage of so many to the offers available for service members during and after their service. Congratulations!

As to  NOT GETTING the t-shirt, it's better than GETTING "THE BILL" $$$$$$.
Congrats to you and Mom for raising a fine young man, and my gratitude to him for his SERVICE!!!!
It's one thing (HIS SERVICE) we can never repay.

Thanks guys,
I think we did good, just the other day we had to take the little guy to the clinic and this lady had 4kids two which wouldn’t listen and kept destroying everything in the waiting area, moving furniture, throwing toys, the older kid sat there next to mom while the younger kid was on a leash, and every time mom got tired of him she just handed it over to the older kid, I swear she probably just locked all of them in one room and did whatever she wanted, probably just sat and got high..
For everything we’ve been through I’d say we did good, stuck together as a little family and kept pushing forward!

  Yeah that too.  He's young and "love" is just as powerful as any narcotic.  These youngins' have to learn to "slow their roll" IMO.  I remind mine to follow their lifes dreams and if they have someone they'll either support/encourage or not and in that case forge ahead.

Many of my friends joined after HS and many retired after serving 20 and 20+ years.  Some  got degrees while in and went on to have second pretty amazing careers.  The ones who retired without degrees also have pretty great careers.  Now they are looking at a second retirement and not even 60 years old yet.  I kick my self in the arse often for going to culinary arts school.

Navy is a great choice.  He'll see some amazing places and possibly come out west to California.  Then he'll be in trouble with the beach and all the hotties his eyes can handle  8)

 :salute:

Congrats, JR!

The Navy has some great assignments. My brother was in the Navy and found it to be hard on his family--he was out to sea quite a bit. Nevertheless, he enjoyed his time in service and looks back at his career with fondness. He liked working with great people and did, in fact, get to 'see the world.'

The service provides many great opportunities. You get out of it as much as you put into it. I hope your boy gets to take advantage of some of those opportunities.

I once tried to join the Navy (reserves), but they said I was too old.......

 :salute:

  You too?  Army, Marines, Air Force, as well as Coast Guard also echoed Navy's response.

She pretty much told him he couldn’t join because she didn’t want him to leave her, yet she had plans to go off to college, but to top it off expected him to follow her, not for the education but just support her.. heck the job he was working was because her sisters bf worked for them and he hated it beyond words, he was givin the opportunity to go back to his old job because they fired the one in charge for what they did, but he wouldn’t go back because “she” didn’t want him to, not only because they fired her, but because of some girl I think.. needless to say the day they broke up he quit his job with his other in hand, just needed a week off to unwind from everything..
He had many options as to what position he could take up but some didn’t even step aboard a ship, and that was one thing he really wanted to do, sail the sea and see what else is out there! Heck I don’t think he’d remember we took him to the coast to see an ocean. I myself have seen both east/west coast and both Canada/Mexico, his mother on the other hand before I met her only stepped foot out of PA like twice, so this should give him the opportunity to see what’s out there!
My grandfather was in the air force for 27yrs and got stationed all over, then after working for Yale university for another 20yrs finally retired, and looking back to see he’s been all over the world but never even saw the Alamo even though they were stationed only miles away at once, it was time to travel the US, sold the house and car, bought a trailer and truck and did so for 8yrs then bought into a retirement park to live the life.. it was my dream to buy a little trailer and do the same with the Mrs, to show her places I’ve been and more, but that dream got crushed because of medical. Anyway, I just want him to be happy and to see there’s more out there besides a few states!

Congratulations! You have raised a fine responsible young man who is smart enough to take advantage of the opportunities available to him.  He'll travel and learn a skill then he's going to have heath care for life, college tuition, GI loans when he wants to buy a house,  and veteran's preference when he's out in the job market.  I couldn't serve due to a physical ailment and I regret it to this day.  My father was in the Navy for many years though, so I understand being part of the Navy family.  Here are some important dates to remember.  https://navysports.com/schedule.aspx?schedule=223
