Replacement Repair (Warranty)?
on: November 22, 2018, 01:56:13 AM
Sent three SAKs off for repair several days ago. Vic is now working on them. The three were: a SwissTool from the early '00s (banged cutters, tight tools from original owner, part of box cutter blade crammed between the tools on one side which was my fault when trying to self-fix it, as well as a bad chisel, also thanks to original owner), an OC Pioneer (bent blade, broken awl), and an Artisan/Craftsman/84mm Fieldmaster (broken scissor spring, original owner lost the scissor screw, and had squished what looked like brass wire as a "pin" to replace the screw).

The Pioneer and Swiss Tool are listed as "Replacement Repair" at present--what does that mean? New major parts? Complete replacement of tool and knife?

And here's the cool thing--the Artisan they were apparently able to fix, and is currently listed as In Repair. I was beginning to regret sending that rare bird off, as I was afraid it was going to be replaced. So apparently they still have parts for 84mms with scissors!

My guess would be the Swisstool sounds like a replacement will be sent.  The Pioneer very well could be fixed with parts.  Glad they were able to fix the 84mm.  I often worry about any damage to mine with scissors.  Can't wait to see what they do.

I know this is old. What was the result?

I picked up an old cross Alox with a broken blade recently. I was going to send to Vic for repair. But it's definately not a warranty item.

I would not want to send in a knife and take advantage. I am not the original owner.

A nominal fee (I had selected $10 as the amount I'd let them charge before contacting me, and that's what they charged for each knfie) was charged, so I don't really call it gaming the system, since technically, you are paying them for the work.

The OC Pioneer was returned with a new in the box knife. Blade on the OC Pioneer was lightly engraved with a an underlined "W".  Really, I wanted the OC Pioneer fixed, but I have been EDC'ing both quite a bit, broken OC as work knife, silver as EDC. I have a nearly new '70s OC Pioneer that was great-Granddad's, and that's a dress knife.

The SwissTool was returned with a new in the box modern SwissTool and sheath. Serrated blade (only one that could be opened up, thanks to that little incident with the box cutter blade on the other handle) was again lightly marked with an underlined "W"

The 84mm Craftsman was fully restored. New main blade (crossbow pile side stamp), new scissors, new scales, new scale tools, and I think new liners. Saw was sharpened, and all tools got a polish. I got the old scales, scissors, and scale tools back with the repaired knife.

If you mark sentimental value, they will repair it. I thought, like Gerber and LM, they'd keep the tool if they couldn't fix it, and I could always buy another OC Pioneer (in fact, I had a mint one anyway) or SwissTool, but it would have taken me ages to find another 84mm Craftsman; which is why I did it that way.  I have some more that need some work (SwissChamp with bent saw, '70s Craftsman that is a hot mess, and Wallker I bent the saw on), and I'm marking all three as sentimental and see what happens.

I'm a little unclear.
For the OC pioneer. They sent you a new pioneer and returned the OC with the broken blade?

I'd really like to repaired. I was contemplating trying my hand a taking a blade off a new one and swaping. But I'm positive Vic would do it better.

Interesting.
I'd rather have the old one fixed and pay a higher fee. Thanks for the info. I'm fairly sure I'm going to send it in.
