I was thinking of making a scientist using a compact and an explorer. The question is if I take the explorer apart do you think I can reuse the pins since the final product will only be a two layer knife? If anyone else has any info it would be appreciated. It would save having to peen the pins on one side if I can reuse them, I hope.

Thanks NKB. Be honest what do you think my chances are of it coming out right the first time? I am a little reluctant to try, but I modded a kick and put scissors on it and it came out okay. Maybe this will too.

If you take your time you should be fine. A two layer mod is a really good mod to start with. If you're still a bit apprehensive get a couple of old Spartan's or the like to practise with first. Actually its not a bad idea to get a couple of breakers to harvest bushings from. That way you don't panic if you mess up the bushings on your Explorer.

Are you stripping down an Explorer with the new or old style magnifier?

I am going to use the new stye magnifier so that everyone will know it is not an original. I have two NIB scientists but just can find the heart to carry either of them.

The most common problem people have with their first mod is over peening, so take it steady. Before you take apart the explorer open and close the phillips driver a few times and get a feel for what the factory action is like. It's quite different to that of the older phillips. When I put together my Scientist I spent ages in frusration trying to tune its action to be like that of my old Scientist. I figured I'd gone horribly wrong somehow totally forgetting they had a completely different design.

Thanks for the tips. They is a gun and knife show this weekend just an hour away and there is a vic dealer there who has the handle scales for 5 dollars a pair and engraves the blades of any knife he sells for free and his prices are pretty good. I got the two NIB scientists back when they were being discontinued so they were readily available then. They are probably the rarest saks I have.

Green are my favorite too. Rotokid had them a while back.

I think the explorer to scientist mod is a good one to start with. Great tips on adjusting Neil. The new phillips is totally different feeling.

You only need about 1mm of pin proud of the bushing before peening. Too much brass will get you in trouble.
