I was going to be a member!  Ordered a 551 BK from Smokey Mountain Knife Works. Was supposed to ship out today. Instead I got a notice I had been refunded my money. It seems they ran out of stock.

It’s ironic because after I ordered it Friday night, I realized I’d ordered the wrong knife. I had wanted the MINI Griptilian and forgot and ordered the larger version.

I immediately emailed them to ask to cancel the order but didn’t get a reply. Today I called and was told it would ship today and it was too late to cancel once the order please placed.

I had decided I was  looking forward to getting the knife then they refunded my money.

Haha!!!

Well at least you’ll get the one you were trying to buy  :tu:

By the way, was it custom, or just a regular 551?

I'm in with an old shot:

I mess around trying a number of different knives and brands, but I think the Griptilian could well be my "one" folder. Just about perfect knife for me. Great design, great egos, super lock. Yeah, the Grippy could be the last knife I ever give up.

I worried about the Axis lock in high-dust environments, but I've carried a BM Rift on deployments in sandy/dust areas without and problems.

I'm down with the mini, the 555HG and more recently the 555-1 are way up there on my wants list.

Thinking of picking this up at Cabelas in next few days. Opinions?  Is the D2 pretty good?  I am not too worried about corrosion problems but toughness and edge retention are important.

It was just a plain Griptilian with the drop point, plain edge blade with black coating and black nylon handles.

I have 2 BM in D2 steel and I really like it overall.

This Mini Grip is almost new really but I wish they still made them

And then there is this delicate flower whose looks I think speak for themselves and the toughness of the D2!
It sharpens easily for me and I have had no corrosion or rust issues at all and we get insane humidity here in the summer.
This is the knife I use hard outside and often for things I shouldn't use a knife for.

People like D2 for those qualities.

I’d suggest seeing if you can get one in CPM-M4, which to me personally, is better for what you’re looking for. You could get an M4 Griptilian through the benchmade customizer if you wanted :tu:

Just know that neither D2 nor M4 sharpen anywhere near as easily as the 154cm that comes stock.

D2 and M4 are great knife steels, but I just love 154CM.   :tu:

D2 and M4 both probably have better edge retention. D2 can be a bit 'grainy' with bigger carbides. And M4 and D2 are more prone to rust/corrosion (I think).  Like you, rust and corrosion don't seem to be a big problem for me--I live in a dry place and keep my knives wiped down and oiled.

However, 154CM seems to me to one of the best all-around steels, and takes a great edge. A really great edge.

What Nix said then add blade shape. For me I would be looking at the sheepsfoot thumbhole version. Mini grip not full sized.

I’d honestly have 154 over any other “supersteels”. Sharpens easily, stainless, doesn’t chip as much, etc. etc...

Its kinda like a SAK blade :tu:

I have one Grip in M4 but have not used it at all,it just sits there lookin purty!

The one use in M4 I have is the Spydie Gayle Bradley which is a lot more knife than it might seem at first glance but I think it is intersting that on my annual pilgrimage to Golden Co where the Mothership will happily sharpen a Spydie for you while you wait, they wouldn't touch up the M4 Bradley!

They use the Sharpmaker System for the in store sharpening but will only use machines on the super steels they said?

So that would put me off the M4 a little except that it seems it doesn't need sharpening either they way VG-10 or 154 might which I think is sort of the point to the super steel in the first place?

As for D2 though I think the idea is that it is really rugged and pretty forgiving and easily sharpened wile also retaining the edge a lot like SS.
Again I have never seen even a hint of rust on my Adamas despite using it for everything I can think of to cut, chop or pound! :dunno:

D2 has a reputation for rusting easily. Not my experience, either.   :dunno:

I've touched up my M4 Bradley on a diamond stone. I'm willing to bet that a sharpmaker will sharpen that M4 as well. (Can't swear to it though, as I can't remember actually doing it). If the mothership doesn't want to touch M4, I wonder how they'll handle Maxamet?

The grey scaled Griptilian in my photo above has a 20CV blade. Another great steel, but seems to sharpen most easily on a diamond stone. I'd love to see a Griptilian with a Cruwear blade.
