The best firesteel striker ever
on: December 09, 2008, 03:02:22 AM
I just tried to use a carbide knife sharpener on firesteel. This thing is nuts! The best I could do with a hacksaw striker is some spark shower (the spine of hacksaw is sharpened), but the carbide sharpener scrapes off so much material they actually becomes tiny molten fire balls and roll around for a second or two! I scraped toward a piece of printer paper and one of the balls burned a hole through the paper! I haven't tried this outside yet (because it's -16°C out) but with this you probably won't even need any prepared tinder, just any dry stuff will do.

I'm not talking about those pull through sharpeners but this (or one of the clone/rebadges which is what I have).

is a video I made compare hacksaw and carbide sharpener.

The best striker I've used to date it the spine of the F1 :)

I swear you could practically weld with it :D

I've tried knife spine too, but trust me, it doesn't come near what the carbide sharpener can do.

I'll bet it doesn't :D

Doesn't it wear out the ferro rod faster though

I'm sure it does, but they aren't that expensive, and if it lights stuff up easier this way why not.

If you carry one don't forget their original function...sharpening and steeling...multifunctional is good :tu:

Using the sharp corner of the insert leading will actually scrape metal away. Dragging the sharpener lightly with the corner trailing will work as a steel for freshening an edge.

It's really intended for coarse sharpening of garden tools like Machetes, Axes, Shears etc...it will do in a pinch for knife blades if you know what you're doing and you have nothing else available.
