For this challenge, I am giving myself two tasks so that I can 1) get familiar with the hatchet, 2) enjoy the ability of making something with my own hands, and 3) ensure I have some good pictures for the challenge.  My first task will be to attempt to carve a wooden spoon with my hatchet.  Not the whole thing, but the rough shape of a spoon.  For the second task, I am having my wife, who loves to go to garage sales, to find me a good axe or hatchet.  By "good" I mean something that is in terrible condition so that I can refurbish it.
I think that between these two chores and some other random beauty shots, I should be good-to-go for the challenge.

I wonder if I'll be able to get my hands on a 32" to 36" felling axe by september. That would be a fun thing to do this challenge with

That would be an awesome thing for the challenge.

I was in a cold-weather survival school once. As part of the instruction, we viewed an old black & white film made for the military. A narrator and a Canadian (Ojibway) woodsman were dumped out on an island in the arboreal forest with just a full-sized felling axe.

In short order, the woodsman had built a fire using the axe. He then proceeded to build a shelter. Then he built some kit to spear fish and traps for small animals. When their food stores got raided by a bear, he built a trap to catch the bear.

Meanwhile, he used the axe to build a canoe and a paddle.

He then paddled off to effect a self-rescue.

All with an axe (and a lot of knowledge and skill).

I think the point was that one can be quite resourceful if necessary. But the utility of an axe stuck with me.   :o

Put me down as a maybe/probably

Not sure which I'll use most likely a sog fasthawk.
I may rotate in a couple others. Probably going to be a lot of kitchen prep and beauty shots.

I have to be careful because public possession off of "real property" is illegal in Texas.
I can walk down the street with a sword but a little tiny tomahawk...nope

On that note would an axe shaped object such as an Tops Atax, OffGrid Survival "axe, Farson blade, Klax, or one of the various other compact survival gadgets count?
Then again some of those may be more knife than axe

We're breaking fresh ground here, Noa. I can't say what will count and what won't. Maybe post up a picture of the "axe" in question and we'll get a mod to adjudicate it as a valid entry or not.   :dunno:

I'm a bit confused by those Texas laws. An axe is covered under separate law from knife law? I'd love to understand that better.

Anyway, hope you'll join in!   :tu:

Current list of Axemen:

1. Nix (hasn't decide which axe...)
2. Rapid Ray (needs a vacation axe)
3. RF52 (hasn't committed to the challenge, but will in a couple of days)
4. Borg (planning on a smallish axe)
5. Styx (most likely, if things haven't gone full-on 'berserker', and even then, perhaps.)
6. Greg 'Chopper' Jones (with a couple axes and a positive attitude.)
7. KBM3 (with an axe to be named later...)
8. Fuzzbucket (with a cobbled together midden relic)
9. 'Battle Axe' Barry Rowland
10. Noa Isumi (with multiple axes)

TX Penal code 46 is rather interesting.
As long as you aren't a felon you can own just about anything you want, taking it off your property is another issue.

Single Edge knives 5.5in & less are unregulated aside from total weapon bans in places like Gov buildings & airports

Double-edged knives, throwing knives, swords, sword cane, spears, and anything over 5.5 inch you can take anywhere that you can legally carry a gun (30.06/7 "no carry" signs do not apply to this)

Clubs, blackjacks, tomahawks, axes, Etc are considered "illegal club" and banned from carry off your own property or anywhere you have permission to be with one.
So for axes it generaly gets applied as reasonable use ie: landscapers and campgrounds are ok but having one on you 'just because' is a crime.

There are other regs for diffrent weapon classes and even body armor but I wont get into them.

As for the question of oddballs that may or may not count I was just looking for an excuse to buy more toys

i do find it interesting that they put them together with clubs and blackjacks, but that might be just be with the distinction of tool and weapon. although clubs can be tools and still are used in such a way by many people accross the world

considering Nix is running the show, he'd probably allow a smatchet just because he loves to see tools used

I would think it should be close to resembling a proper axe to be included in the challenge IMO .

Yes!   :tu:

(I got my Axe-user badge with a Tomahawk, so I know those are fully approved "axes" by MTo standards.)
