Nice 'hawk, Ray.

The originals 'Vietnam Tomahawk' was designed by Peter LaGana, who I believe was a USMC vet from WW II.

(Image removed from quote.)

An updated version is still being made and issued to some US troops, like combat engineers. Apparently they make good tools for breaching operations, etc.  I always thought the handles were a bit short, but that may have made them easier to tote around, along with all a soldier's regular gear.
Cool looking Hawk and great information!  :like: :tu:
I was thinking short handles as not to catch all the jungle vegetation. Much like cutting the long barrel shotguns to short barrels.

I know several of us are getting ready for the Axe challenge, and I thought I would post a link to a great source of information about the axe.
https://www.fs.fed.us/t-d/pubs/pdfpubs/pdf99232823/pdf99232823Pdpi72pt04.pdf

This article talks about history, how to use, and how to maintain an axe.  Overall, a great read.

Nice find and great read, Ken!   :like:

I have to say, this line brought a wee tear to my eye:

Quote
If you search the Internet for ax, axe, or axes, you will probably find more sites related to guitars (referred to as “ax”) than you will to those dealing with cold, hard steel.

I'm now starting to think of our axe challenge as a small step to reverse that trend.  :tu:

I'll sit this one out.
I do have an axe but, in all the time I've had it, I've used it zero times!
I don't really have a need for an axe in my daily life. Sometimes I wish I did...

Have a great challenge guys. I'll be following it.

OK, first, nice axe. Second.....perhaps...just perhaps....this is an opportunity to try to see what that little gem can do?

You don't have to carry it every minute of every day. Just try to use it when and how you can. And post a photo every day.

I really have no idea where this challenge will go or how it will turn out. But that's the point!

One thing I promise to try, as I do in all my challenges, I will try to cut up a chicken (neatly) with my axe. I'm thinking I'll try to spatchcock it and then grill it. It could be a huge mess, a disaster, but let's see what these axes are really capable of!

Think about it, FlnixNOver (and everyone else).

Count me in on the next one of these!
I have a British proof colonial era repro 'hawk that I'd love to put to the test.
Each station of the Dept.  I work for was issued a breaching kit, including an axe.  Unfortunately, it's nowhere near as cool as the SOG Hawk.  It's the same kit the military was issued.  I'm at a highway station now (as opposed to a county station where we dealt with pretty much everything you could imagine ), but I'll see if I can find one that I can get a pic of.

Hehehe.....well, use a battle axe if you must, but that Tomahawk sounds like the better choice.

Right now, Barry, it looks like this challenge will kick-off in October (but vote for the month you want!).

Current list of Axemen:

1. Nix (hasn't decide which axe...)
2. Rapid Ray (needs a vacation axe)
3. RF52 (hasn't committed to the challenge, but will in a couple of days)
4. Borg (planning on a smallish axe)
5. Styx (most likely, if things haven't gone full-on 'berserker', and even then, perhaps.)
6. Greg 'Chopper' Jones (with a couple axes and a positive attitude.)
7. KBM3 (with an axe to be named later...)
8. Fuzzbucket (with a cobbled together midden relic)
9. 'Battle Axe' Barry Rowland

Still got some time to make up my mind, but let me warn you just now that, my hypothetical participation will consist mostly of beauty shots.
I cannot carry it to work, and once I get back home, I don't see myself needing it.
I bought it hoping for more picnics in the woods and more camping trips... So, maybe then, I guess...

Solving problems you didn't know you had in the most obscure way possible

"And now, it's time to hand this over to our tame race axe driver. Some say, he can live in the forest for six months at a time without food, and he knows of a secret tribe of only women where he is their God. All we know is, he's call the Styx!" - TazzieRob

I'm looking forward to it!  I forgot I have a Bear Grylls hatchet that I'd like to put in the rotation.  The handle is really too short for anything large, but it's handy and sharp.

That's part of the reason I'm choosing a small axe (hatchet) for the challenge. I've always used larger axes and haven't done much with small axes, I think the challenge might be a good time to learn more about this size of axe.
