dang this is a fun thread
Solving problems you didn't know you had in the most obscure way possible

"And now, it's time to hand this over to our tame race axe driver. Some say, he can live in the forest for six months at a time without food, and he knows of a secret tribe of only women where he is their God. All we know is, he's call the Styx!" - TazzieRob

It's actually a rescue axe from a bus, they where in every bus back in the day and we had one left at work so I got it :woohoo:
It does look like a small firemans axe, but it does not have any markings at all and I have no idea what it's made of. It's been laying around in a bus garage for many years and been wet and dirty several times but not a single rustspot on it.
Anyway, I think it looks cool I'm not sure if I should cut of the spike and try to make the back more of a hammer and use it for a camp axe/hatchet or leave it as is.

Since Fuzzy has been too lazy to pick a name from the excellent list of suggested names, I have time to sneak another suggestion in.

This one might be a bit arcane, so bear with me.

Philosopher Jeremy Bentham was a pioneer in the branch of philosophy known as 'Utilitarianism".

Quote
Though there are many varieties of the view discussed, utilitarianism is generally held to be the view that the morally right action is the action that produces the most good. There are many ways to spell out this general claim. One thing to note is that the theory is a form of consequentialism: the right action is understood entirely in terms of consequences produced. What distinguishes utilitarianism from egoism has to do with the scope of the relevant consequences. On the utilitarian view one ought to maximize the overall good — that is, consider the good of others as well as one's own good.

I suspect Utilitarianism is Fuzzy's forte and it lead him to purchase the Rinaldi: he gets the good of the axe, we get the good of learning about the axe, and Rinaldi stays in business. It's all good--that's Utilitarianism.

Now, Bentham was a bit quirky, the way English people often are.

Here's Jeremy in wax and bone:

I say 'wax and bone', because that is Jeremy's skeleton, covered in a wax likeness, and dressed in Jeremy's clothes and hat, with his walking stick. More on the stick later. He wanted to be preserved so that if people wanted his company, they could wheel him out to have a seat at the table. Sad to say, he doesn't attend parties much, but mostly hangs around some dusty old English university.

Skeleton and stick, yes, but it's not his head.

Jeremy's head:

In accordance to his wishes, his head was removed and preserved in the Maori tradition. However, it didn't go to plan and a true Maori-style head was never really achieved. So Jeremy's head gets displayed separately. I said 'quirky', right?

Ok, but what, besides Utilitarianism and a desire for some bizarre form of immortality, do Jeremy and Fuzzy have in common?

They both like to name their possessions.

Jeremy named his walking stick "Dapple" and his teapot was named "Dickey".

It now seems only fitting for Fuzzy to name his new axe:

Right, where do I start.

First off, it's far too early to pick a name yet... and besides, let's face it, the quality's been pretty pish poor so far -  I expected better things, get your finger(s) out you lot!*

Secondly, about Jezza, my brother and I were both totally convinced that we saw that display (in the flesh) at Broughty Ferry Castle in the 80s, but as far as I can see, it's never actually left UCL... So, I ask you, what's that all about? Maybe, it was just  a tramp after all as had been suggested by others. Anyway, exceeding interesting fellow none the less - well worth looking up... and, once again, an excellent and thoughtful post Nix.  :hatsoff:

I still recon I saw his body though.

*I am of course joking.

I think Jeremy Bentham has gotten out of the University once in a while for special exhibits. I think this would have pleased him. So, I believe that you may have seen him in the flesh....so too speak.   :D

Awl the more reason to name the Rinaldi, "Dachet".   :pok:

I do like the idea of naming the axe after some Philosopher... or maybe an Ancient Greek Tyrant?

At times.....it seems that these philosopher-types have too much time on their hands.....kinda like some MT.o members I could mention.....  Time that might have been better used chopping wood. Eh?

For instance, I'm not convinced that humanity is significantly better for this gem:

Bayes' enumeration of Hempel's "Paradox of Ravens", while mostly useless, does have a certain charm in its empirical illustration of man's folly and implied encouragement to spend one's time better.

With this as a nudge, it seems prudent to name the Rinaldi, "Brân", to remind us to spend more time chopping wood and less time stuck in our heads.

Brân?

Glad you axed. "Brân the Blessed" was a Welsh King. Legend has it that he had his head buried at the site of the White Tower in the world-famous Tower of London.

Quote
According to the Welsh Triads, Brân's head was buried in London where the White Tower now stands.

He did this, with his face looking toward French shores, so that he could ever protect Britain from invasion. Hence, Brân is part of the tower's legendary strength. Not that axes were always used responsibly at the Tower.....

Did I mention that Brân is the Welsh word for 'Raven'?  Well, there you have it, a new submission for Fuzzy's axe name, based on Philosophy and why we should chop more wood.

Or something......

An alternative Raven tie-in might be the Russian god, Kutkh.

Kutkh is a bit of a trickster who chips away at the curtain surrounding the world, thereby letting in the light. Additionally, he apparently gets around--if you know what I mean--and helps populate the world with various peoples and animals.

Quote
Kutkh's virility is emphasized in many legends.

Not sure why, but it seems appropriate....

This is very interesting. I remember there's some excellent Northwest Coast stories about Ravens and trickery. I need to have a think and see if I can remember some of them.
