Small hunting knife
on: June 27, 2019, 03:00:51 PM
I have found this knife today, and i would like someone to help me with identifying. It is 18cm total length, horn handle and carbon steel nickel covered.
It has stamp on the blade SISA. Also i need some help with sharpening it. I tried with sandpaper on mousepad, 800, 1000, 1200, 1500, 2000, 2500 and finished with 3000, and
also leather strop, was trying to get convex edge, but no success. Thanks in advance

Don't have any info on that knife, lovely blade btw .  You seem to have done a good job on the edge however you ended up with a V grind it seems and rather nice one at that  :tu:.  You are not far from a convex edge.  The transition from your primary and secondary ( the one you did ) grind is what is known as the shoulder.  You very well may know this so sorry if you do.  That shoulder can now be "blended" so there is a rounded/curved transition from the primary to the edge, convex.

Here are 2 videos, one a rather long video and the other from a youtube who is fantastic IMO to point you in the right direction as typing it out may cause more confusion than help.  I will add a few tips.  Use a marker so you can see where you are grinding.  You already did a good job on the secondary bevel so you clearly have a steady accurate hand.  You'll need to roll the shoulder on the sandpaper as you grind this time so you can effectively blend it.  You'll likely end with a shallow ( low ) convex unless you want to raise it up which would mean taking off more material.  Keep looking at your sanding so you can make any needed adjustments.  Take your time.  I have also found that with time stropping ( rolling knife on strop ) does soften shoulders on most of my knifes with them.

Cool looking knife.  :like:

I'm not familiar with that maker's mark. Could be a custom.....?

Thanks for reply to both of you. I have watched the videos and tomorrow i will try sharpening it again. I have done the same thing as shown but I guess that i need more time grinding.
On other carbon steel knives i got very sharp edge easily than this one. Maybe its just the type of the steel. And i don't think it's custom because the stamp looks like factory, but it's possible. Thanks again

I would start with a much lower grit, in the two or three hundreds depending on how hard the steel is.
