I believe that 'ideal-size' would be in the hands/discretion of the user.  For me, bigger-is often better.  Others may prefer a more diminutive size, or larger mid-range.  There is no 'wrong-choice'.

I carry various sizes of knives for different purposes.

Agree that it probably has something to do with the size of your hands.  All of my users are on the smaller side (smaller hands) except a 5-inch Camillus Lockback that comes camping (but not hiking) with me.

For me, an Opinel 9 is the absolute largest that I carry, and that on hikes.  The Spyderco PM2 is seeing a good bit of carrying time, but I usually wind up actually using my Vic Executive, old USA made Old Timer small Stockman, Case Barlow or Mini Trapper.  I like having the toolkit of the Executive, but love carrying a traditional.  They team up pretty well.
