How to center a knife blade
on: December 14, 2019, 05:46:53 PM
I have a few knives where the blades are not centered. For some , it is not affecting the knifes functionality, but it still bugs me. On a few, the side of the knife rubs the scales. Is there a trick to centering them? I am working on a cheapie I got at Walmart now, and it has a screw on one side of the pivot, but just a plain nut on the other where there is no way to hold it to tighten.  At least no way that I know how. I was thinking that may do the trick. Do any of you have any advice you can give me? Thanks!

What I do is try and hold the blade centered when tightening the blade pivot screw.
I'm sure someone will chime in with better ideas :tu:

I found some of his methods work quite well, but for the 'wedge' method, instead of using a cardboard, I open the blade to 90 deg(half open), then lightly push the blade to the direction I want it, as I tighten all the screws on the frame.

I have tried that, but I cannot tighten or loosen the screw. There is a torx screw on one side, but the other is just a smooth screw head and there is no way to keep the entire pivot from just spinning when I turn the screw driver.  ??? >:(

Yikes, I hate that too, how about pressing the whole thing on top of some kind of rubber to stop the pivot from spinning?  I just hope they didn't thread-lock the whole thing, then you might need a soldering iron to soften the thread-lock to continue.

Hope you find a way to hold it when thightening the pivot :tu:
The higher end knives with one smooth side on the pivot usually has a flat side on the pivot barrell to keep it from spinning when loosening and thightening.

It is just a cheapo knife I am working on, and if that is the case, I may leave it as is. I was also considering taking a Dremel tool and etching a groove in the smooth screw head so I could hold it steady with a flat head driver. I watched that video you sent me the link to, and that is great info, even if it does not work for this particular knife. Thanks!

How I wish every maker just use that and keep the thread-lock to the minimum! :hatsoff:

On the side opposite the torx with the nut is, are there holes for pocket clip? I had bad spinning issue with a Kershaw Scallion with heavy thread lock. The only thing that worked was putting a lock washer on the spinning side and then the clip over that, then I heated it with a soldering iron, and put pressure on the blade and was finally able to remove it, this video also helps:
