US Army Knife
on: January 28, 2020, 11:23:16 PM
Is Victorinox now selling the "US Army Knife" themselves, as opposed to the third party that originally had these commissioned? Because Knife Center now has them for $70, seemingly a lot less than the third party who was selling them to the military was asking.  Still, $16 more than a Swiss M2008 or GAK.

Huh, whaddya know about that?  Private sellers are still asking $150-ish for them on eBay, so 70 bucks sounds pretty good to me.  I might pick one up after all.

Before looking at the KnifeCenter pictures, I did not realize that the main blade has the year of manufacture on it, like a SAK.  That's pretty cool.

I've never run across this vendor before, but I did find a place selling them for $99.

https://universalspartan.com/product/demo-knife-the-knife-combat-utility-nsn-1095-01-653-1166-swiss-army-knife-victorinox/

It's my understanding that these SAKs are somewhat controversial for some folks.  While never officially issued to US personnel, they do have an NSN and I have run across a couple references indicating a mass buy by the Defense Logistics Agency.  I'm also of the understanding that Victorinox has one on display in their visitor center in Switzerland.  That's enough for me, and I just ordered mine from KnifeCenter (whereas the $150-ish price tag resellers are asking on eBay was more than the knife was worth to me).

I'm not trying to inflame the debate about these things here, but just thought I'd share what I know.

The ones I saw, and the one in my own collection, all have the 2016 dated stamp ('16').

Haha, no problem, and for 70 bucks it's a lotta SAK!  FYI, my order took 2 weeks for KnifeCenter to fulfill, but whatever.

Mine came today.  I only had time to clean it up best I could.  it reminds me of my few black oxide Leatherman tools.  The black was easily rubbing off on my hands and fingers.

I never even looked to see what year is stamped on the blade.  I have been looking for one of these for a few years now, but they always seemed either hard to find or insanely expensive.

I bought mine as a user, not a collector piece.

I'm currently cutting back on a few purchases as to have one by the time we do the Soldier Challenge later this year. I think the BO on it looks awesome!

$70 is a little high, but the black coating adds to the price. But, certainly, better than the $150-200, even $300 some sellers have asked over the past couple years.

The blacked out Combat Utility Knife Soldier with a 2016 stamp?  I thought their first year was 2017.  If not... I am now in search of yet another one with the first year's stamp and the one I just received will be put to use :D

Thanks!  Should have done a little more research.  All I had found at the time was they were awarded the contract in mid 2017, so I made an assumption.  Now this '17 will be among those put to use and I'll be on the hunt for a '16 for the collection.

Snatched one up soon as I saw them on sale for a not insane price.

Ordered it about a week and a half ago along with the new Armbar Drive.

Trying to be patient but I want's it almost as badly as Gollum and his ring.

Hurry up post office!

Mine took two weeks just to ship from KinfeCenter.  Not sure why, but it is worth the wait.  Such a nice piece.

SwissKnifeShop (my main SAK dealer as I back off of Amazon) now carries it as well. I think this further validates my theory that Victorinox is either making them alongside the GAK and Swiss Soldier as civilian variants, or Vic was stuck with a lot of them.

Doubt that happens... they would probably re-scale them.
