Lansky Turnbox/SAKs?
on: January 29, 2020, 02:59:25 PM
I recently ordered a Lansky Turnbox, as I noticed my old Fieldmaster is extremely dull. This is a stop-gap between regular stone and a Sharpmaker.   I'm wondering how efficient just the straight ceramic version is on SAK steel; mainly as I forgot they made a diamond version, and it was too late to cancel the order  But given most of my knives are lower-end stainless (420HC, 440A, 1.4116, 1.4034, 12C27, and cheap 420) and carbon steel (1075, 1085, 1095), I figure it should work decently.  I'm wondering just how well.

I know diamond cuts more quickly; and for some steels like 440C (the only way I was able to properly sharpen my early Buck 110) and D2, about the only thing one can use. Does Lansky sell the diamond rods on their own, or are there rods from another company that work?

And for cleaning, I bought some white "Pink Pearl" erasers (pink leaves a residue supposedly) and this special cleaning eraser Lansky makes.  It''s also supposed to remove rust, which is, in part, why I got it as well.

I've never had an issue getting SAK steel sharp with the ceramic rods of the Lansky.  As far as cleaning, I've used Bar Keepers Friend with a sponge and warm water.  I've used this on Spyderco Triangle Ceramic as well.

I've been using the TurnBox on my SAK's happily for about two years now, it's perfectly suitable for Vic's steel with the ceramic rods. I don't use anything fancy for cleaning, just simply go over them with a regular white (pencil) eraser, a Herlitz one I think. Works pretty good, the rods bite/cut well again after cleaning.

Alrighty Cody here you go.  My Ceramic rod all needed cleaning.
Warm water, Bar Keepers Friend Power, and a Sponge.  This took me all of 10 mins.

Dampen sponge add powder and scrub rods.
I didn't add powder to water it was just to rinse the rods.

I used about a table spoon or so of the BKF powder ON a damp sponge NOT in the water.  Rods are all ready to go.  Thanks for reminding I really needed to clean my gear.

^^^^^  This is exactly what I use for quick sharpenings and exactly what I use to clean.  Very simple and works great!  The Turn Box and Sharpmaker are both so easy to use to keep sak's and other blades sharp!

I'm using the Lansky System on mine with pretty good results.  I still can't quite get a SAK blade back to factory sharp, but I'm very, very close.

For those interested in further reading, I started a thread on the subject of SAK sharpening a couple years ago and there is a lot of information there.
