A recent post by toolguy in the wood handled Wednesday thread prompted me to make this post about knives with interchangeable blades. The idea is far from being new;having been introduced in the early part of the twentieth century and perhaps earlier by the Nagle Re-Blade sets and the Wostenolm pruning knife/saw sets.
They were a popular item in Europe in the 1920's and 30's with the Germans leading the way with multiple tools in these kits such as hammers;saws;pliers;tape measures and the like. Often there were two handles included in the more elaborate kits that would be able to hold tools in multiple positions.
After WWII there was a resurgence in them by several of the USA companies that were often promotional items advertising various companies.Imperial and Utica were among the manufacturers that offered these kits that were not as elaborate or as well made as the earlier German models.
Then Kershaw introduced their Change-A-Blade kit that was for larger blades and then Case followed with their folding hunter model.Neither seemed to have been too popular and I believe they were only made for a short while.
So with that I will present my accumulation of tool kits with changeable blades for your viewing pleasure. This will take several posts as I can only post four pictures at a time. If anyone knows how to string more pictures together I would appreciate the information.
