Great adventures game
on: April 05, 2020, 09:45:56 PM
I get it, we are all stuck inside, and for those of us in the northern hemisphere, the weather is starting to get nice and we are starting to get the urge to go outside and enjoy it.  However, that's not an option for many of us, so instead, let's play a little game.

No, not one of those idiotic Saw movie puppet kinds of games, I challenge each of us to post a pic of themselves every day of a cool adventure you have been on in the past.

I'll start us off- this was me, paddling on the Ottawa River in my giant pink kayak.  Despite showing my face, I think it's a pretty cool photo, and not an angle I usually take.

Come on folks, show us some of your cool adventures, and let's be sure to update this every day!   :pok:

Exactly this time last year I went on a road trip with my daughter - paddled the great glen way and climbed Ben Nevis and generally enjoyed the hospitality of Scotland.

Nope, but got the full run down on what to do if the pilot blacks out. Just as well he stayed conscious

Great pics and some fun looking adventures so far!

Today's pic is another kayaking trip, only this time not alone (obviously!) and not in Ontario!  I had been invited to paddle in a large event on the other side of the province, so I loaded up my own boat (orange one on the right) on the trailer and drove for an hour to meet up with some friends, whose boats got added to  the trailer for transport to the starting point.  And, the whole run was for charity, so that made it an even more positive event.

This was a fun paddle, one of few that I had done with that particular friend, and was memorable because it started in an estuary and ended in the ocean.  I was having so much fun playing in the ocean waves that I didn't realize I'd lost one of my spare paddle halves.

Fortunately it was a pair I didn't use often (although made a decent backup set), and even more fortunately, I managed to find a replacement. matching paddle half at another event the year later.  The odds of that are astronomical, but there it is!  :D

That's beautiful!  What an amazing trip that must have been!

Today's photo is (I think) one of the coolest photos ever taken of me:

Megan and I were snowshoeing in a wilderness area outside of Ottawa a few years ago.  It was a long one, and we weren't sure we'd make it all the way around this giant loop, so we brought a bag meal lunch (I think it was an Alpine Aire one, at least that is what it looks like in the photo, although I don't recall what flavor) and we stopped to eat.  Out came my Etekcity stove, MSR pots and bowls, Nalgene full of water and some GSI tongs and, of course, the Lite My Fire sporks!  :D

I feel like this picture really makes it look like I know what I am doing, which is one of the reasons I like it so much!

Thanks, I love my Tilley, although the airflow models are not ideal for winter wear.  One of these days I will get a warmer one!

Yesterday's adventure was a little less successful.

Agreed!  Double wow indeed!  Very breathtaking!

And yes, the starter crapped out and I couldn't get it going in the parking lot.  I tried the usual stuff, but it refused to start, so onto the tow truck it went.

Still, it has been absolutely rock solid for me for seven years, and over 200,000 kms, so I have no complaints.

A bit late posting today, but that is to be expected after paying the dealership a crapload of $$ today....

But, here is a very pleasant adventure:

Shortly after getting to Ottawa a few years ago we needed a good, safe place to shoot arrows, slingshots, pellet guns etc.  We found this spot, which, as it turned out, was not the ideal place to shoot, but we only discovered that after shooting for a while and losing more than a few arrows to the brush behind the target!

Megan is a fantastic archer, and she is always happy to pull out her bow and show me up!  And I am happy to give her every opportunity possible to shoot!

A bit late too. Busy day...

Jeep Wrangler is a though guy. 200k kilometers and almost no problem is very nice.

Last year I and my wife spent almost the entire year due to job reasons on the coast of our state.

A lot of cool beaches, trails, waterfalls.
Beautifull mountais of part of Atlantic Forrest behind the beaches.

Ubatuba, State of São Paulo, Brazil.

My son and his mini camouflaged Tilly hat in the second pic.

I know you asked for pics, but we were double timing it and didn’t stop all day....

Hiked/jogged/ran the 42 miles of the AT (Water Gap to High Point Monument) in NJ in just over 10 hours this past October. Did it, but wouldn’t again as we missed much of the scenery and such as we were trying to finish before dark. Better to break this one up into smaller chucks and swim in sunfish pond or crater lake and check out the High Point monument, etc.

42 miles??

That's a hell of a run, especially over rough terrain!  I doubt I could have managed anything close to that, even on my best days!

Hevy- Brazil is very high on my list of places to travel to.  I have heard very good things and very bad things about Rio de Janeiro, but never any boring things.  I have also heard that the rest of the country is absolutely stunning and one of the best experiences a person can have.

I am absolutely terrified of the ocean, and yet it is one of my dreams to one day sail from my home in Halifax all the way down to Argentina, and I am pretty sure that will result in a lot of time spent in Brazil!

Yeah, I kid you not we were stupid enough to think we could avg 7 mph and we were gonna do it in 6 hrs..... hahahaha.

There are stretches that are flat and past sunfish pond there are a few miles of carriage roads where we were able to run and make up some serious time.

I could barely walk for a few days afterwards and lost the big toenail on my right foot.

Def,
Brazil is in fact huge! And have a lot of stunning places to go.
The São Paulo state (were is IMHO the best place to live) have awesome beaches for all tastes and sports. In the state north coast the beaches are equal or better than Rio de Janeiro state. The interior is great!
(I do not recommend Rio as first choice, just because there have better places to Go). The Brazilian coast is awesome from south to north. The interior is also great!
(Google about Fernando de Noronha Island)

Argentina is great! Lovelly country, nice scenarios, best meat, good wines!
Chile is also great! Lot of beatifull places to go, good wines, nice people.

Okay, you got me- those islands are beautiful!  That looks like an amazing place to go snorkeling, and I would love to paddle around those islands!

I know of a nice cabin cruiser that was going cheap before the pandemic started, and I imagine would be cheaper now.  It's a fully restored 1974 model and it is going for about $5k USD.  At 24 feet it's a good size for some bigger water, but small enough for going inland as well, and I would love to get in one and explore the world.  Mostly coastal stuff though, you would need to be a MUCH better sailor than I am to actually go out in open water!   :ahhh

Today's adventure has been well documented here, but worth revisiting.  It was my first hike during my recovery from a compound fracture of my right ankle, and I figured it should be a vertical one!

I'd tell you more about it, but you are probably better off reading the original thread as the details are a bit hazy now!

Iceland in 2005 with my wife. Slept in the car for a week, circumnavigated the entire country, took some great pictures. Got lost one night in the interior, running out of gas we forded 80 streams, some of them over the bonnet deep, trying to find our way back to the road. Oh and we may have hit a sheep.  :D
