91mm Leather SAK scales
on: April 18, 2020, 03:18:57 PM
Inspired by a discussion started by comis in the SAK Stack Challenge, here’s my effort to make some leather scales for a 91mm SAK.  :salute:

Under lockdown (a bit like Sam with his mop handle project), I needed some raw material.

My wife would not give up any old handbags for my project  but I remembered having some old Blundstone boots with rotted soles that could not be repaired.

So the boots offered up just enough material to work with. Talk about repurposing!  :D

The leather was too thick to form around a scale, so I sanded down the raw side on my belt sander. Took the thickness down from 2mm to around 1.3mm. Now ready to create the scales...  :tu:

As the SAK still needs a scale on the inner side, I decided to wrap the leather around some 1mm brass.  :salute:

I did not want overlap, so I trimmed the edges back about 1mm. The idea being once wrapped, they match the size of a normal scale.  :tu:

Now I’m no leather expert. In fact, this is my first effort to make anything with leather.  :D

So it was a little crude, but I first glued the brass scales and leather together with contact, and then used super-glue to wrap the edges.  :tu:

Thanks Sir Vic...  :hatsoff:

Final task was to use epoxy to glue the leather wrapped scale to a normal aluminum 91mm scale.  :)

Could only find some poor quality no-name epoxy and the scales moved a little in the vice.  :(

But got a nice texture imprint on the leather from the hardboard.  :D

Last job was to drill through the rivet holes, and they’re ready to use!

Thanks comis. Yes, if I do it again I’d use thinner leather, 2mm brass and not cut them back as much. After pulling the leather around the sides, it leaves the base aluminum exposed. But as a first test, I’m happy. Probably build a quick Spartan from some spares so they have a home.  :tu:

That looks very nice.
For thinner leather try goat or kangaroo. Light but very strong. You should be able to get down to about 0.5 to 0.8mm.

Cheers Pete
