Rebar Pliers Issue
on: May 06, 2021, 03:39:12 PM
A friend of mine got a Rebar yesterday. When he used the tool to cut a plastic tap with the wire cutters the plier head got really hard to open/close and wasn't moving as freely anymore. We were able to improve it with lots of lubrication, but it seems to get stiffer again after some opening/closing. Is there anything else we can do?

I am sure there is another thread about this somewhere

I forget what was done to remedy this ??? Maybe take something and put it in between the handles up close to the plier head and squeeze it pretty good  seems like that undid some of what was making the plier head tight to begin with :dunno: not sure if that was a permanent fix or not though

I hope it is and it helps :salute:

Also work the plier head back and forth quite a bit (letting it heat up just a bit) with some type of lube/metal abrasive stuff in the pivot. You should start seeing some blackish crud come out,  keep working and cleaning it, see if that helps :salute:

I'm with Poncho on this.
I think it was about the pliers pivot not being round but slightly oval/cone shaped causing it to tighten up at pressure.

It was a case for the warranty department :pok:

Sorry to hear that but, it appears to be a manufacturing fault as it is becoming quite common on Wave, and if correct, ST300. Now the Rebar as it seems that mine was not an "isolated case" (I thought mine was the only fluke in the series); maybe make a warranty claim or try to fix it yourself(which I did in my B.O. Wave and Rebar). Get some lapping compound (a grinding paste used for engine valve lapping and seating to improve the fitting and sealing of the valve against its seat), push it in through the gap between the pliers halves and,  around and into the pivot through the gap on the free moving pliers half. Work pliers for a bit, rinse and test. If it feels ok, wash and clean with soapy water, and if available, blow dry to make sure EVERY LITTLE RESIDUE OF THE COMPOUND BE REMOVED. If not, repeat lightly until it feels right. Be careful and test regularly as it is a very aggresive grinding compound. Hope I was clear(), and that it helps.

Thanks for your help, gents  :hatsoff:

We worked the handles of the Rebar, probably a good 300-400 times until the black crud came out. Then some more. By that time operation was smooth. Unfortunately the issue can be replicated. We tested it by gripping the wooden handle of a hammer and applied light pressure. That was enough to make the pliers seize again. We are back to the beginning

He is kinda disappointed, and will send it to Leatherman for repair or replacement.

I'm also sorry, but Leatherman still ignoring the problem IMHO it's a design problem...
Enjoy!

An update on this:

Service Technicians inspected it and....could not find anything wrong with it. They are asking if we want the tool back...

Why would we want a tool back that was sent in because it sucked??  :pok: We did not just sent it back because we were bored

Well he asked them for a refund, as he did not want a broken tool back he was not happy with.

They replied that they could not issue a refund because it was not purchased directly from LM. He would need to take it back to where he bought it.
Which was a local hardware store in Colorado. Issue is he is in the military and just moved to his new duty station. In Korea...Which he also told them. Thanks for nothing Leatherman  >:(
