Day 29: 96OT with me as the primary folder. Gotta admit, this is the knife making me actually like full-sized Trappers. Even used the field pick fixing a hooked rug. Like the toothpick, only more useful. The blade wear is really making me want to carry this one a lot more. My only problem is losing the removable tools. They seem to retain better than SAK tools, but are nearly impossible to find. I've found tweezers (which are the same as the Tough Chip used, which I presume meant more were made, that's why they're easy to find), but not the pick. Guess I'm gonna have to buy a Chinese-made Buzzsaw Trapper.

This was probably the fastest Challenge I think I've ever done!  I know Dean would have truly enjoyed it, and it was an honor to be a part of this.
My Case Sodbuster Jr is my carry for Day 30.

People have done shell-handle conversions to these knives to make them solid-handle knives with proper handles, liners, and bolsters. Pop off the hollow handle/bolster combo and liners, put on new liners and bolsters, and some nice handle material, and you can't tell they were cheap shell-handle knives.  Takes a lot of skill, time, and effort, which is why I don't bother.

Or, you could do what I did with my Richards Scout--put electrical tape where the plastic sheet fell off.  It's going for a solid-handle conversion when I get the cash.

I was thinking about doing something like this but

a) I still like the knife as it is.

 b) I'm not certain I have the skills to do a good job of it.

 c) it sounds like hard work. :D

Day 30!

I gotta say this has been a very quick 30 days. Decided to round things off with the knife I bought at the start of the month; the Case Sodbuster jr.

Day 30

I would like to dedicate my last day picture of my GEC 54 to Dean

I love everything about this 54 except it's nail breaking pull, and I wouldn't even know the possibility of tang modding existed if not for Dean and Steve.  In fact, I just went back to Dean's thread today to re-read his kind instructions, and he was even kind enough to drew me diagram to explain the mod!  Because of that, I often think of his generosity and our friends here on MTO, whenever I pick up my traditional knives. :salute:

Thank you Steve for hosting this wonderful challenge and everyone's participation, what a great way to remember a friend! :hatsoff:

Day 30:

Here's to Dean!  :salute:

A great challenge inspired by a great MTo member.  :tu:

For me, carrying this Camilus 66 for the month was a real joy. I've always been a stockman pattern fan, and the 66 bore out why this pattern is so well-loved. If nothing else, it's a bit fun to be able to select what seems like the best blade shape for a given task. Moreover, the size and design makes it a pleasure to use for edc tasks. Sure, she's a bit aged and has some wear. Her snap is no longer youthful. But she feels good in hand and is easy to use. Her steel is sound and takes a keen age. In addition to some character, she has a lot of life. Camillus did a very nice job with this pattern and this design.

There are a number of good reasons that a person might select a knife like a SAK for EDC. I've tended to carry a SAK more than a traditional pattern in the past. Still, using this knife for the past month has been a great reminder of why these knives have endured. It is such a natural knife to carry, it feels like a pair of jeans or a favorite hat. It has become part of the fabric of my days. I think it will be strange to switch it out for a new challenge knife. At the moment, it's hard to imagine needing anything more....

Day 30: Schrade USA 3OT. Fun fact, I got it for my birthday 5-6 years ago. Folks asked what I wanted, and I pointed to a couple of cheap used ($5) USA-made Schrades on the website of a prepper type place in NC that used to carry a ton of old/rare secondhand knives for dirt cheap prices. The 3OT is only 3" closed, and has a pretty small blade. Schrade's 440A sharpens up really well, and is quite tough.  Did most of what I needed. Only added the cheap Tac-Force knife when I had to do some heavier cutting since it was in the dirt, and didn't want that stuff in a good knife.

Day 30 - To end the month, I selected by two oldest working pocket knives, that I acquired personally.

The Trapper was purchased by me at near by drug store that had a nice knife display case, when I was 10 or 11 yo.  I wanted a knive with a pointed bladed.  Much more than my boring Cub Scout knife.

I couple years later I used to clean my rabbits that were caught. Then learned to properly skin the fur, to catch a good price from sisters that bought my catch.  Then also, to skin muskrats that were trapped, in addition to the bounty paid by the state.

Then, older, worked some trade sites when college and found this Kline Electrician handy, for straight blade screwdriver.
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

A very nice tribute to Dean.

Great examples of traditional models and fantastic pictures shared by AWL.

Kudos to NIX for completing this event using only with his Model 66. And his signature chicken post.

David and Poncho for sharing only a small selection of your collections, yet great selections.

And not to brag, I completed the month withOUT buying a single knife.  Yet, my last two copies of SMKW have some selections marked.

Thank you AWL!!!

If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!
