Perfect Pioneer
on: September 12, 2020, 07:12:36 PM
So, I’ve just managed to convert my pioneer to torx.

I love the pioneer, and use all the tools apart from the can opener.  Is there a tool on another knife that fits into that particular slot?  Need ideas!

Some people mod the can opener...
- cut the sharp part to extend the reach of the SD.
- Maybe turn it into a gut hook sort of tool.
- Maybe sharpen the SD down to be flush with the arc of the quarter-circle to make it into a scraper or "bionic fingernail"

Extending the SD sounds like a great idea. :)

Yep I also have a similar on off relationship with the opener layer. The gut hook or parcel opener, as you could also call it, thing does work. See the pics. The more extreme ones do sit lower (in a 91mm at least) as the bottom curve that I removed turns out is what sits on the spring to stop it but you can still get to the nail nick so not a massive problem. The less extreme one still works (although not quite as well) and gets around that aesthetic problem.

Maybe youre the one I'm getting the ideas from.  theres a guy on YT that has taken the quarter-circle clear off to extend the SD. But then the tool sinks into the handle and is hard to extract.  So he had to cut the scale back a little.  Personally I didnt like the aesthetics of the mod.

I just leave mine as is.  I'm completely obsessed with the times I've used the can opener and saved the day, and can't let go of the time I didn't have it on me... and my friend had a bunch of us over for dinner and had to open a can with a chef knife.   :dwts:

These days cans always seem to have a ring pull on them, so it’s rare I even have to use a proper tin opener.  Still, I know what you mean

If you feel so inclined... see what you think about my third idea... sharpening the SD down to make a scraper.  That's the one mod that I would consider on mine.

I believe the quarter circle doesn't touch the spring at all, but rather the 'hook' portion.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

The pruner blade is an option.
It's in place on some other Alox knives in the position of the can opener, so it should be a standard fit.
Same thing for the electrician's blade.

Pruner is a GREAT idea.  But when I googled it it turns out they do a version caller the Rancher Pioneer which has that anyway!

Awesome work! Very cool to see exactly the bit that stops the tool falling too far when closed.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

Folks, it was just quick work using a bench grinder.  Nothing fancy or complicated. The grinder ate away the metal quickly. I did try not to overheat it though.

That's a brilliant toolset!

My Rancher X is waiting on steel pivots from Russia.  My home-tapped brass ones are so fiddly to make I've ordered some in.

I’ve got 8.8 and 11.8 on the way.  For 2 layer and 3 layer.
It’s a LOT more expensive than the ones I’ve made myself in brass, but also stronger and less of a total pain to do.

ok, i have some decustomforge. big advantage: the right diameter 2,5 and 3mm but a litthe short for customs.
the US axes are more big, 3,175mm (1/8) and 12,7mm (1/2) better for a 4 layers but drill all the parts  :poh:
the brass axes are not strong so i use maillechort axes like Alox, easy to make riveting.

So you hammer them like the stock alox knives?

So, after a lot of experimentation and work, I have the perfect pioneer... Technically a Rancher X I suppose.

Hand made brass scales,  hand tapped brass pivots,  torx screws.

Now I have to stop or my wife will kill me  :)
