What leatherman suits my needs the best?
on: January 09, 2009, 09:43:53 PM
This is my first post here so I'm not exactly sure on where to start.  I'm in the market for a multi tool and like the leatherman line.

I work on computers, ride a motorcycle, sometimes fix random things, but usually not heavy work.  I did have to use a metal file to file a gun sight down not to long ago.

I don't want something that is huge so I can carry it to and from jobs, have it on the motorcycle (if it will help at all).

I already am carrying the following gear around with me every day.

Keys, flashlight, wallet, cell phone, firearm w/ 1 extra magazine.  Sometimes I have a folding knife for defense on my weak side.

Target sells the ever popular Wave and they have a CS4.  Which one of these will fit regular computer case screws for desktops and the smaller ones often used for notebooks?

Do both of these have a ware stripper on them?

My main concern is to not get one that is to large.  It looks like both of them come with a nice carry pouch.

Is there something in between the CS4 blue one and the wave I should look at that might better suit my needs?  How durable is the smaller CS4 one?

The wave would be a good fit since you can buy a screwdriver bit kit that has many different screwdriver heads. It isn't too big of a tool and is reasonably durable. There is a wire stripped in the can opener, but I don't remember it ever working that well.

How well does the can opener work?  I am a bit of a survivalist.  Does the Juice and the Wave have a can opener?

I may also be bringing it to me when I'm in an office type setting.  Would the Wave be to large for me?  It doesn't sound that much larger from the length on the website.  Is the width about the same on Wave and Cs4?

I was given a gift card and want to buy something I can really use and have if I need it.

If your planning to use it on a bike I'd go for either the Crunch, or the Core, but then if your a survivalist then you'll be needing a saw, so I guess it'll have to be a Core :)

The LM bit drivers will be hopeless for fixing anything on a motorcycle in my opinion (I've ridden bikes for yonks) as they lack the reach to get at all the awkwardly placed screws (in other words all the screws :D) and even if they can reach, you won't be able to turn them as there stupidly fat ::)

Welcome to the forum BTW :)

Welcome to the forum :tu:

I can only buy what Target has.

Out of those 2 I'd go for the Wave

But Micky D is right is your gonna work on motorcycle then you need something more in the line of the Core or the Crunch (the Crunch is a little harder to find though :( ) Good luck with whatever you end up getting though :tu: I don't know much about the Cs4 the only Juice I have is a Kf4 ::)

Wave or Blast.  I like the drivers on the Blast best, but the Wave has a better file and OHO.

I'd recommend the Wave. It has most of the features everyone likes on a multitool, has great value for the money, and can be carried with a belt sheath or pocket clip. (although you'd have to buy the pocket clip elsewhere, as it doesn't come with the wave)

The juice series, although quite capable tools, are just too small for very heavy daily use, in my opinion. I've carried an xe6 for a year and its not quite what the wave is. And you don't get a file with that CS4 you were looking at.

Wave you will never go wrong with a wave. Plus the extras you can get for them is blessing. you can get bits,  extensions, and pocket clips. Go with the Wave.

The Wave was 79.99 and just to much money.  They did not have a Cs4 it was the S2 which is just to small for what I wanted I think, unless I want to maybe replace my knife in the future or something.

My choices were between the Blast and the Kick.  I purchased the blast as it has more tools and didn't look much larger.  The Kick didn't have the files either which can come in handy.   :multi:

It seems like a good one.  It has a 25 year warranty  :o  I also see that the blast has a lock on it which I didn't see before so it seems to have the major things I wanted on the wave.

The only real differences between the Wave and the Blast are that the Wave has:

- One handed opening blades;
- the bit driver (don't forget you can buy a bit adapter for the Blast if that's important);
- the extra serrated blade;
- the option to buy a pocket clip,

If those things aren't important to you, then the Blast will save you some ozs and some $s. It will function every bit as well, and has the same 25 year guarantee. The reach of the drivers may be an advantage for you too.

Congratulations, you have yourself a really good multitool there. I hope it does everything you need.
I used to come here a lot.

It seems like the only other difference I can tell is my blast has some plastic on it where I think the wave is all metal.

This shouldn't be any problem for me.

I carried a Blast for 3 years. I used it often and it never let me down. You chose wisely  :cheers:

I Upgraded to a Core. Also a great MT but it is a bit heavy. I work as a handy man and wanted something that can really take a beating. I gave my Blast to a co worker and it is still going strong.

How well does the can opener work?  I am a bit of a survivalist.  Does the Juice and the Wave have a can opener?

I carry an old Wave but the can opener really has not changed much.  I use the can opener 2 or 3 times a week at work to open my lunch.  You need to be a little careful when opening the can because you can rip off little bits of metal around the edge of the lid that will fall into the food, but with a little practice it is no problem.  Other than that the can opener work very well.

Not for me it doesn't.  But I guess everyone will have different results.
