Swiss Cutlery Historians - Interesting Specimen?
on: May 20, 2012, 12:37:15 AM
This Maker's Mark believe has been seen on a few early Soldiers, and looks like a pre-cursor to one of Wenger's very early marks.  This appears to be a product of the Swiss Cutler's Association, but I need expert opinion on this, it could just be one of the early companies that formed Wenger.  I believe this table-knife would date from the 1800s, does that sound correct?

The Coutellerie Suisse was an early name for Boechat which became Wenger. The three faces logo might actually derive from the profile of the Matterhorn !

I'm not a Historian and I'm sure other guys here can tell more about it. But Wenger used this 3faces logo on some of the old knives together with the label TAHARA.

Thanks for the information guys, good to know I'm on the right path with this.

Right, the 3 faces logo is the one I'm talking about being adapted from this earlier logo.  This earlier Wenger logo makes more sense to me if it was an evolution of the "Coutellerie Suisse" logo as the companies merged.

the brand name Coutellerie Suisse was used until Theodore Wenger purchased the company in 1907/1908 and changed the brand name to Wenger & Co / Wenger & Cie.  The three faces symbol was used for many years after that, either on its own, or with WENGER DELEMONT or WENGER TAHARA

I am working on a book about vintage Wenger knives, hoping to have it done in a couple more months
