So what do you all use your multi-tool for?

I was wondering what everyone used there tool for everyday. Is it mostly work related, hobbies or general jobs around the house etc. Also which tools do use the most.

I will start..

I am an Electronic Engineering student in Nottingham, UK. I use my multi-tool mostly for general day to day tasks, cutting open stuff, doing up the odd screw. I find I use the knife/scissors the most along with the screwdrivers. I also like having some wire cutter around in case of any emergency wiring jobs!! I don't use my multis in the outdoors (I climb a lot) , I prefer SAK's then.

So what do you all use your tools for??

Working for years as a security speSmurfpillst meant that anything that needed to be done was my job- everything from repairing alarm systems to health and safety issues were all within my job description. A do-all tool was an important part of my do- all job, and a dependable tool was worth it's weight in gold.

I still do some work like that, and around the house I can go from installing comuter parts to fixing a doorknob to installing a new car stereo, all in the same day. That was yesterday in fact!

Rather than carry around a hundred pound tool box (there are 72 stairs in my house) I rely mostly on a multitool and/or SAK for almost everything. If I need a specialized tool I'll get it, but I prefer to carry a good tool and try to o as much with it as possible.

I'm just getting started with mine, but so far I'm mostly opening well-taped envelopes and boxes with it.

I will be installing a new car stereo soon, so that gives me a good idea ...

I carry a SAK at work everyday. I cut plastic cardboard, etc... When I was an archaeologist I used the multitool a lot more than I do now. But when I am home I have a multi with me all the time, it comes in handy.

By the way Ging, are folding knives with locking blades were forbidden in the UK? I read an article in a magazine about lockblade knives being evil over there.

I've carried a Multitool for about 7 years now 99% of the time its been a swisstool ( although not the same one ) , my uses range from roadside car repairs , inserting batteries and mending the kids toys , I use it at work alot for cutting packaging ect. , first aid like cutting clothing and bandages , around boats for cutting rope and cable ties and all manner of things for replacing and repairing equippment.Most recent multitool adventure can be found here http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,843.0.html
Its hard to say which tools I use the most , I miss the scissors after selling my RS but then its not too bad as I always have a SAK on me .The pliers get a good workout along with all the screwdrivers and the ruler often comes in handy

A bit OT but in a word, no. You can only EDC a slipjoint with a blade less than 3 inchs but you can carry a lockknife or fixed blade if you have a good reason. For example going camping or for work.

The law here, at the moment, is ok, it allows you to carry what you need, when you need it. The problem is the people, a lot think every knife is illegal/offensive etc.

Back OT, anyone carry anything for their job? Any one who works with electronics carry the Squirt El or the new SOG wire stripping Powerlock?? etc

Ging, it is good to know that the carrying of tools is not completely forbidden there. After all, if you could not carry a knife how would you slice you sandwich at lunch.

At the machine shop where I work, all the machinists have a huge tool box at arms reach, with every dedicated tool imaginable inside. Not many guys carry a multitool, because there is mostly no need to. Out of nearly 80 employees, fewer than five have a multitool on their belt.

So for me, my main usage is around the house, or out in the woods, or when I'm fishing.

Latley I EDC a knife more than a tool, if I do carry one it's something small like a swisstech or a crossgrip. When I am at work (Grocery Manager) I don't have uses much for a tool but one is always in my lunchbox if the need comes across. Always lots of plastic and cardboard to cut but not much for screws and nuts.

I used my spirit today to add a nice new cushioned seat to my royal throne.

Then just a few minutes ago, I used it to open a cold bottle of Samuel Adams.

Funny you should mention that- a year or so ago I used a SwissChamp to install a solid oak seat to mine! I even used it as a SAKtivity pic!

Thread ressurection!

Before I left work I walked outside to get some (crisp nice perfect spring) air, and three Young Ladies came out of the beauty supply store next to us and got in their car (that looked like it had been put through a meat grinder..) And what do you know, it doesn't start, but it DOES start the alarm. It was apparently a low battery alarm, but anyways I stood there in the doorway while this thing beeped...they all got out, popped the hood, and began hitting the battery terminals with their KEYS and a small ice scraper

I went over and asked if they wanted their battery disconnected and the car might reset itself and stop BEEPING. That was BEFORE I actually looked at the terminals. Rusted shut and covered in that dry battery crap, AND in a tight area. I could have looked like a complete and total fool if the SOG Powerlock I had on me didn't turn that nut...but using two hands on the first try it started the nut off. Alarm disabled! They got the jump and I used a ratchet and some WD-40 to get the nut back on. I knew I carried that SOG for a reason! Too bad they were skanks, or I would have had three phone #'s...looked nice though

The Powerlock is like a vise grip using one strong hand, but use two and it basically fuses with what you are trying to grip.
