Xmas Present (2020)
on: November 02, 2020, 10:23:08 PM
Ok. So;

Mrs Surge posed the ultimate question  :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh What would you like for Xmas  ::)

This got me thinking (we've all been there  )

I love my PX but would REALLY like something old skool (Boker Sportmesser etc.) So, where do I go  :-\

It MUST be UK friendly, otherwise it'll just stay home.

It doesn't really need scissors (but would be nice) and no thicker than an FX (give or take) as for the saw... :dunno:

It will only open the occasional beer (what with me being tee-total an' all  )

I really like the classic "boy scout/camp" type knife (wood scales) so I'm not sure I have "much" choice

Am I just talking myself into the Boker or, does anyone know anyone that could do a proper custom job  :pok:

If it helps https://heinnie.com/boker-sportmesser-oak

Your views are welcome....

It will be a user and no; I don't want the PXmas!

Spartan Wood or Hiker Wood (if you want a saw) come to mind

I've seen them both but they're not really "present" worthy (it's not my money  )

I want the whole hand down to the grandkids sort of thing (3x the price seems to be where I'm looking)

Proper "Old School" with the bail and solid hardwood scales etc.

I have SAK's and not feeling the love (design yes, not the love)  :dunno:

(I'm getting the Boker, aren't I.. ::) )

Well here’s what will be sitting in a box probably under the bed till Xmas, I might see the sheath and zipper pull because it will be coming with other gifts but the sak will be coming on it’s own and I know that I won’t see till Xmas!

Boker is an excellent choice.

Hartkopf is another good’un.

Have you checked out the Boker City Tech Tools? Good SAK-a-likes.

Before this descends into a thread about some VERY nice knives (that I might yet buy myself  )

I want a proper "Old School" (but modern build) Scout type Knife with the bail and solid hardwood scales etc.

I really don't want another SAK PX/FX that I already have (and love  :tu: )

I'll not use it for heavy stuff; just the pleasure of owning and sitting in the garden, struggling to open a beer with.

However, it WILL be used (albeit lightly) and then passed down (after the I'm pushing up the daisys, hopefully!)

  :drink:

Looks like you already made up your mind, the Böker it is.  However, if it's more about the pleasure of owning it and using it in private (as opposed to carrying it in public), have you considered the Vic Wine Master? It's just superb; I love using it and am sure the next generation will as well. Admittedly, it's not something you want to get caught with in the UK. But for your garden scenario it would just be perfect (it has a bottle opener as well ;))

To me, the Boker is really bad value for the money. It's around $150 (Delrin)-175 (wood) or more (stag) in my neck of the woods, and $205 in yours. You have a heavier knife, fewer tools, and identical steel for that much. I gave up my search, given how SAKs are better, and you can get hardly-used Spartans for less than ten bucks. There is a Phillips screwdriver version that was made in really small numbers, once in the '50s; and then again in the 1980s. Those are even more costly, but are the one I'm after, since unlike the Spartan, you can't handle a common #2 with the Boker, even as expensive as it is.

There is a Chinese-made Magnum version from Boker with Rosewood scales; that runs about $20. It's just got four blades, and nothing backside.   Colonial made a Girl Scout Knife about 10 years ago for their 100th anniversary also; available in rosewood and green-dyed wood scales. It's a pretty good quality knife. I have an imitation stag version made for Ideal Tools.

This is probably not posh enough, and you probably hate the fork thing, but it's an option!
Main selling point is of course the m390 blade which should cut a zillion times longer than a Victorinox blade before needing sharpening. And the micarta scales, which are, to quote Borat, "very nice."

https://www.knivesandtools.de/de/pt/-mkm-malga-6-natural-canvas-micarta-mp06-nc-taschenmesser.htm

Are you set on a penknife with multiple odds and ends? Cos there are a number of really nice UK legal slipjoints out there, Lionsteel Thrill, MKM Fara, Fox Libar/Livri, Viper Dan etc, all of which are great companions for a Vic and come in various wood finishes.

Correction: lionsteel Bestman has wooden scales, Thrill is aluminium

The Boker is a gorgeous knife and definitely heirloom worthy IMHO.

Also, if there are other options popping up, remember there is always next year's birthday and Christmas to keep in mind for your lovely lady for future suggestions.

Boker then. Wood and bail.

Only other I can think of off the top of my head is a Nontron 6 Piece Navette. Lighter colour boxwood scales, nicely decorated with scorch marks.
