Your Top 3 SAKs
on: January 22, 2021, 10:38:22 PM
I know a lot of us have different favorites. For some those or changing, for some they stay the same. Since we haven't had a thread like this this year (  ::) ) let's see your Top 3 SAKs!

Swisstools are included as well. Please only one SAK per position

Here we go:

1. CT34
The one issue I always had with SAKs, their limited ability to handle screws, was completely fixed by this SAK. The bit holder can handle much more than just small screws on electronics  :tu:
2. Pioneer/Soldier (same pattern, so this does not violate my rule of only one SAK per position  :D ).
3. Spirit XC

Let's see yours!

These I like a lot.  Not the most sentimental, that's for another thread.

1) 91mm Yeoman
2) 84mm Small Huntsman
3) 58mm Vagabond

Sadly all three are no longer in production.  So much of the time (when I'm not in a challenge) I carry a knife that was modded.
Rest in peace ColoSwiss, you will always be remembered.

I'm very new to SAK collecting but would choose:
1. Champion (I've owned one for 37 odd years-carry it on long trips)
2. MiniChamp (always in my watch pocket these days)
3. Compact (more often than not it supplements and compliments the MiniChamp)

3. Pioneer. Don't use it too much, but I cant resist its charm.

For the time being...

1. Pioneer X - though it's too heavy for my liking, it's my current EDC and ... The way I see it, a compromise between a Climber and Huntsman in terms of functionality.  Either of these would make a good EDC if I didn't have to choose between having a saw or not.

2.  Swisschamp - it's got the most tools that I'd want to carry, and it's iconic

3. This is a tough one....  Compact.... Huntsman.... Trekker....  I don't know... For now, since I could pick three instead of just one... I'll give it to the Trekker because of the specialized tool set and form factor.

For now....

1 FarmerX (if I was only allowed one SAK this’d be the one)
2 Climber (my fave edc when I need a good tool set but not the lot)
3 Cadet (most edc’d)

Honourable mentions

Best 58 - Manager (compliments ALOX perfectly)
Model 61 Soldier - my favourite to collect, great in use, sentimental favourite
Compact - slim climber but miss the full opener layer
Bantam alox - slim cadet, see compact
Outrider - huge respect after the 111 challenge but probably too big for my real needs

Thankfully I don’t actually have to choose 3 and can switch it up as my mood takes me, phew

- The Pioneer - Mine is actually a Dutch Army knife 89 but it's just like the modern day Pioneer - I just love the feel of that knife, feels right in the hand and feels right in the pocket. I also like the thicker blade of the 93 mm allowing me to sharpen on bigger angle so it would slice better and still have strong enough edge.

- The Spartan - my first SAK and the first quality knife I ever got. Before the Spartan there were all sorts of gas station grade $h*t. That alone is reason enough to be a favorite of mine. Add to the above that in it's small and lightweight package it is so capable to help you in the urban environment that it was my main EDC for almost two years without feeling the need to upgrade it. Then I started carrying another knife but that was with it, not instead if it. Now I have a lot of quality knives and MTs but still grab it from time to time.

- the Handyman - it's just about the biggest SAK I'd carry in pocket (but attached to the belt loop so it would sit vertically) . I just love sitting down, opening and closing tools on it and admiring the design. It's really a powerhouse, having items you don't even know you might want with you until you do. Not being carried often though - at this weight of 155 gr, I often prefer a pliers based MT over it (like the Rebar is just a bit heavier, yet much more robust)

These rotate position depending on scenario but are my three favourites

1. Manager - so much in such a small package. Brilliant keychain carry that I’m never without.

2 Sportsman - always

3. Ranger grip 179 - for the bigger stuff when I don’t want to cut my fingers off!

1. Ranger - so much useful tool density in a relatively EDCable package is hard to beat
2. Outrider - perfect for outdoors
3. Compact - I was undecided about the 3rd choice, but Compact is just a great SAK to have and carry.

3. Minichamp (lost mine, I miss it and need a new one).
