Would this work: Compact Cyber
on: February 23, 2021, 09:47:55 PM
I like the idea of a Compact with the CT driver, but I'd like the normal opener instead of the combo.  So, would this work:

Scissors
Divider
Lrg Blade            -----   Existing Keychain ring / spacer
Additional spacer    -----   Bottle opener where Combo was

I'm thinking that the additional spacer next to the large blade tang would allow enough space for the extra width of the opener, but probably not require a wider spring other than for appearances.

Am I wrong about the spring?  Any other ideas/comments?

EDIT:  I just realized I could do this with a CT 34 by removing the pliers, small blade, and can opener.  This uses up just one knife, though I'd lose the nail file on the hook, which I would miss.

Thanks.

I don’t see why not, but I am an outside the box type.

The new layer you envision will be thicker than the backspring, although I can't say in advance if that would be a problem. An alternate possibility would be no additional spacer on the blade side and a thinner keychain ring next to the bottle opener. And in any case you'd have to bend the bottle opener in the opposite direction and make a new nail nick. Good luck and tell us how this goes.

The spacers have different purposes.  The key ring one needs to be there, and as thick as it is, to keep the combo/opener from hitting the end of the blade, as the two tools completely overlap.  Once the thicker opener replaces the combo, you now need a spacer on the outside of the blade.

Current:
         vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv  Scale
         ================= ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  Combo
Knife    ============================= ----O Key ring spacer
         ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^  Divider

New:
         vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv  Scale
Spacer   ----              ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  Opener
         ================= ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Knife    ============================= ----O Key ring spacer
         ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^  Divider

I hope that diagram made sense!

I think you can do it that way.

I’d try to mix some parts to avoid the spacer, but would require more knives.

Use a 2.4mm tang knife with an outside/back liner from a 2.0 tang knife. It essentially has about 0.4mm of “spacer” stamped into it on the main blade end. What you might also need to do is bend the opener a bit. Or add another spacer/wedge between the key ring spacer and the scissor liner.

So if you use a newer CT29/S and an older Climber, you’d have the parts you need. If the Climber is post-‘91 you can have the hook too.

Hope that helps.
