Rebar Slingshot - cool survival mod
on: March 22, 2021, 08:01:26 PM
I carry a Rebar and a Crunch everywhere, they've both been modded for UK EDC by having the knife blades removed (I carry a Higonokami folder for cutting duties).
On the Rebar I made two band anchor "blades" and put them where the original blades came from. They're 2.5mm stainless and they open close and lock just like the originals.
It does require a hybrid "gypsy" bandset, where the bands are lashed to 2mm cord, which loops through the holes and over the tabs to secure - the bands can be fitted and removed in seconds.
The Crunch is used to grip the Rebar and act as a handle.
The arms of the Rebar can still fold when assembled for easier carrying when out on a mooch.
A nice feature is that the distance between the tips of the Rebar arms can be changed by 20mm or so, the wider the arms the lower the impact point - it gives easy adjustment for shooting at different ranges.
All I need to carry is the bandset and some balls (I don't like shooting pebbles) and I have a weapon capable of taking small game out to 20 yds or so.

Apologies for the chewed up screws on the Rebar, I bought it on holiday 2 years ago and wanted to carry it when I was there so I bought a rotary tool from the same store so I could slot the screws and remove the blades. I now have a set of Loki's excellent wrenches.

I've been playing around with this Rebar slingshot idea for a while. Initially I gripped the Rebar in the jaws of a Leatherman Crunch and that worked but it made for a heavy ugly beast.
To use the Rebar on its own as a slingshot I have to be able to keep the forks open. I came up with the idea of an adjustable spreader bar that fits between the handles.
I can adjust the fork width by screwing the brass top hats up and down the spreader bar.
I've made three and in the photo you can see some of the range of adjustment.
I am more accurate with this than I have ever been, I think it's because for the first time I can use a single anchor point and a single aim point - I adjust the fork width to raise or lower the impact point at different ranges.
I've used my loop method of band attachment so I can band and unband in seconds. I have sets of single TBG for clay balls and double TBG for steel 3/8" balls.
The band anchors are what used to be the knife blades, they're of no use here in the UK since locking blade knives are illegal so I chopped them off and drilled a hole for the loops to pass. The blades are made of very hard stainless alloy, I had to thermal cycle them a couple of times and use boron drill bits to get through them.
Now I have my slingshot with me everywhere I go, because I have my Rebar with me everywhere I go!

cool

The "spreader bar" looks like it would work better.

Maybe instead of the crunch or the plier head, a better hand grip could be made from the sheath.  If you made or modified a hard sturdy sheath (kydex?)  in a way that would hold the rebar when not in use but could also hold the plier head in a sturdy way with the arms splayed out for slingshot use.

Just a thought.
