In the long war between cooks and unpeeled carrots, countless peeler designs have been tried, found wanting in one facet, or another, and eclipsed by new design ai new materials and form factors.
But one stands out among all others as a tour de force in cost efficiency and simplicity of manufacture, durability, and tool density.
Surprisingly, many have never heard of what amounts to the Swiss Army Knife of carrot peelers: Das Original Messer gehartet by Monopol of Germany.
This peeler includes:
1.) a knife for slicing off the ends of carrots;
2.) a conventional, swiveling carrot slicing blade ; and
3.) a tong for holding the carrot against the slicing blade.
The Messer gehartet allows one to pull the peeler along the carrot, as with a conventional peeler, OR to pull the carrot through the peeler, OR some of both!
No more picking up a paring knife to cut off the ends, putting it down, and picking up a peeler to peel the carrot.
Cut, cut, peel, twist, peel, twist, peel, twist, peel, twist, peel, etc.
Yes, it is a specialized peeler that will not switch from carrots to potatoes. It only does carrots (and maybe celery though I am not sure why you would want to peel celery).
Alas, Das Original Messer gehartet by Monopol did not quench the Quixotic human thirst for a better carrot peeler.
But change has not really eclipsed it.
