Coghlan Wire Saw
on: January 20, 2009, 01:05:20 AM
When I went to Florida, I bought a bunch of things and Bass Pro.. Among the things I bought was a Coghlans wire saw. I tried using it today, and it is an utter peace of sh*t! It is coiled up and when I tried to straighten it out to use it; it remained coiled! I will never buy another Coghlan product as long as I live! By the way, I tried the UST SaberCut Saw and it worked flawlessly!

Coghlans actually sells some well made stuff. I was surprised to see that the steel tent stakes they sell are individually marked "Made in England" on each stake. Their Fold-a-Cups are Swedish made and of course they have Opinel knives branded for them. I believe their Sierra saw was made by Opinel in the past when they had wooden handles.

The key is look for the Country of origin on the packaging.

Coghlans sells two different wire saws, the cheaper "Sportsman" and the "Commando". The easiest and recommended way to use them is to string them on a green branch like a bowsaw.

Your absolutely right about that; I have the Sportsman. I believe the Commando isn't so stiff and crappy!

I think all wire saws tend to be crap, the way they cut generates way too much heat so that kills the steel temper and it breaks.

Get those pocket chain saws, or sawvivor if you want something compact.

I have a Sawvivor and a UST SaberCut which is better than the other pocket chainsaw IMO!

I have tried wire saws over the years and all with the same resulting snap about half way through anything :ahhh

I believe that if I ever bought one again (the idea is so great :tu: ) that I would leave it for light duty stuff since that was probably its original intention :D

They have a secondary use as snares. I had a commando wire saw (bcb?) that performed pretty well on small branches.

You guys are right...those wire saws were intended for small pocketable kits like the SAS survival tin. They were for cutting shelter poles, splints etc...not firewood gathering.
