Fire ant now available from Victorinox
on: July 26, 2021, 03:17:06 PM
Apologies if this has been raised before, but I’ve seen that the FireAnt kit is now available from Victorinox direct - I’ve just seen it under the new arrivals bit of the UK site.

Hey, that's cool!

I've used the Fire Ant and have been pleasantly surprised with its effectiveness when combined with a willing tinder.

Very interesting! I hope they take on the toothpick replacement version as well, hopefully the price can come down a bit when Vic starts ordering in bulk.

I'm interested in the fire ants, £30 just seems like quite a lot of money, even for the set, but maybe I'm just out of touch?

They don't appear to be available on the UK Amazon

I'll pick some up soon to try them out. Seems like a great idea to have as a backup or even just for fun.

I hope they add the FireFly (toothpick-replacement ones) as well, especially since I learned of the 3rd slot for a shorter toothpick.  :D

They’re a bit cheaper on the tortoisegear.com website, plus being the inventor, they also sell the firefly and different sized packs.
Bought directly from Brian a few times, very good to deal with

Wow. That’s cool news. Congrats to the Tortoise Gear team!

I love mine and was glad to be a backer for them. The kids like them too, and have been practicing with them when we go camping.

They're so small. How many times can each be used? Do they throw off ample sparks for starting a flame?

They are small!

The toothpick replacement (Fire Fly) is a bit delicate, too.

However, they do work. I've used both to start a fire. The tinder stuff is good, too, but tends to get roughed up with pocket carry. Nevertheless, I've got some stashed in a few corkscrews.

How many fires.....?  Dunno. I've used mine a few times only. The Fire Fly is reusable as long as you create sparks from the edge, not the flats. (It is the thickness of the flats that keeps them in place in the toothpick slot.)

Technique is everything when using these little ferro sticks. Be sure to have very good tinder (cotton balls, fluffed jute, or their tinder). I've had success trapping the tinder under & behind my striker blade and drawing the striker over the top of the blade. The saw is awesome for this. Teeth hold the tinder down, sharp spine strikes well.

With these little tools, you have to build a fire up slowly. Once the tinder is going either move the flaming tinder to the fire lay, or start building the fire on top of the burning tinder. Place fine kindling over the tinder--use a branch or log to prop it up overr the tinder without crushing it out. When that catches, start adding bigger materials until the fire is self-sustaining.

With good preparation, good tinder, and some careful use, these little guys are excellent back ups.  :tu:

NikGyver on YouTube has a couple of good videos on using it. Seems he was testing it when it was still a Kickstarter idea.

Hard to say exactly how many times it can be used. I’m pretty sure you could strike it at least a hundred times, depending what you use as a striker as well as your technique. While I have often lit tinder on the very first strike, that’s not always the case. My guess is that I could reliably count on one to last maybe 3 weeks lighting one fire a day, if I was intent on stretching it’s use. And if I was using it that long and often, that double that would seem possible.  :dunno:

But based on my kids’ performance so far…maybe only 4-5 days. Hard to say for sure since I didn’t give them new ones to use.

Yeah, we talked about that in another thread since. I can confirm his estimates now and have started lots of fires with one or two strikes…even in the wind with the regular orange helix tinder. I use only 1/4 of the small size too.
