My "NEW" Orange scaled Compact!
on: August 24, 2021, 05:26:08 PM
As decided by members in a previous thread my replacement Compact needed to be properly dressed in it's new orange #D printed scales, with the glow in the dark cross.

But first, a pic of my old yellow scaled Compact, which I hope to come across soon, now that I have a replacement.

Notice the old one didn't have Plus scales, and so didn't have the pen with it.  I did, however, equip it with the pin and eyeglass screwdriver.  :D

Picture #1 below shows the Compact, prior to disassembly, the Spartan Lite that will be doing the work and the pretty new scales.

The rest show the installation method of first removing the pin, pen, toothpick, tweezers etc, using the can opener from the Spartan Lite to pry off the old scales etc.

Once the old scales were off I gave it a quick wipe down- this was a used knife, although you wouldn't know it considering how much it ended up costing me....

As you can see, the old scales and the new ones are substantially different- the 3D printed ones are solid, and the cross goes all the way through rather than being just on the surface like the original Victorinox shield.  And, the printed scales are solid.

They seemed to snap on easily at first, but didn't quite go on all the way.  I will admit to having hurt my hand a little while trying to apply the pressure necessary to apply the pressure necessary to stick them on.  In the end I had to use a hammer, and to keep the scales from taking the impact, I used a piece of wood between them.  Once I did that the scales were on absolutely solidly, and I don't think they are coming off any time soon.

The pin, pen, toothpick and tweezers all fit in very nicely as well- at least as well as the Compact fits in at work!

All in all I am very pleased with these scales, and I will be sure to update this as I get a few miles on them.  So far they feel sturdy and they have a slight texture, which gives the knife a nice grip- although I wonder how long it will take before that texture accumulates dirt and grime- or how easy it is to clean when it does.

I'm glad to hear that you were able to use your wood to install the scales properly.

Looks great!

I've used a vise to press on scales before. Might work for you next time? (Just make sure you wrap something around the SAK so the vise doesn't mar the scales.)

I would have used a vise but I don't actually have one.

That made it much harder to use!   :ahhh

Pretty solid scales! Love how the cross goes awl the way through. The textured openings for T&T and pen look like they'll add some more security to hold them.
