Question to the mod gods
on: December 19, 2022, 02:01:08 PM
When dissembling SAKs how in Earth do you remove those pins so cleanly?? I mean, I press and file and hammer them down (and even after having filed down their heads I gotta use a lot of brute force to push them out with hammers and such) as a result the separators look like a war zone. Bent and filed off and scratched and... :( When I look at the photos here though, the separators are cleaner than my soul! Bright, shiny, spotless

What is your secret?  :dunno:

Bushings? The protruding metal parts that hold the pins and to which the scales press on?

Do you use a center punch to press them through?

Also, if you're doing mods, you usually disassemble more than one knife, so have extra bushings that weren't hammered on.

And more experienced moders will hopefully chime in.

Oh yep, the bushings. I managed to remove the rings (during the process I damaged them but they're still okay-ish )
I did use a punch, yes, but no matter how hard I hammer the punch in the bushings barely move.

I use a 2mm or 2.5mm bit and drill the peen at one end of each pin to a sufficient depth to release the collar/bushing. The collar comes away 50% of the time, 50% it comes away when applying the first punch. Then I use a punch and hammer, quite gently applying only sufficient force to release one liner or tool layer at a time.

I watched the Der Eidgenosse videos on YouTube to learn how to take SAKs apart.

Get yourself some center drills, different sizes. Start small and work your way up. A center punch to start and then slow drill. Then get a straight punch close the the diameter of the pin, maybe just a bit smaller. Then, use a backing board or something on the other side to hold the liners and tap it all the out. If I can think about it and do it I can post a video of it.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

Yep this ….I often ‘bowl’ the top of the pin with a small round burr dremel bit  before drilling (instead of centre punching) which helps keep the drills in the middle as you start but you’ll find your own favourite method :0)
