My response was going to be that I don't feel the need to wear chain mail when using an axe, and that I never have before.

On a completely unrelated note, I do have a decent scar on my left shin from that time I missed with an axe and buried it in my leg.

I do, but not for mundane reasons, I want to wear it for pillaging related reasons!

Important safety note to the vikings and the two of us: While chain mail is great for melee combat it makes for a piss poor PFD!  :D

Haha, the chainmail can seem a bit overkill, but honestly, once I started wearing it it allowed me to get over a bit of a safety-related mental block and I actually found I was able to put more power into my swings. But yes, for PFD I agree it's not the most useful. That's why I carry a spare inflatable raft in my axe kit :D

Honestly I didn't even know such a thing existed for chopping/safety. I think it's cool and wise to use it but like many if I'm not chopping often I might not use it.
judge others by how they treat those they are allowed to mistreat

That's a lot of very nice axes, sir.
My question surrounds the topic of all those axes and even chain mail, but - respectfully asking - do you normally chop in sneakers as opposed to good ole Chippewa steel toe logger boots if not JK or Whites?  What's your boot of choice if you do wear boots?

Yes, I almost exclusively wear sneakers when I chop. Honestly, I have a lot of faith in the chainmail (and also haven't really found a pair of steel-toes that I'm a fan of). Since chainmail is technically the only safety requirement in competitive 'timbersports', I figure that it's probably sufficient on its own. I've been eying a pair of Nick's for a while but honestly I've worn Merrell boots for years now and love them. They went through a period a few years ago where they weren't great quality, but they seem to be over that slump now (I think).
