New member...what did I do?!
on: December 14, 2021, 03:34:30 AM
Recently went on a little bit of a Buck knife spree (I know this is the SAN section...I'll get to that shortly!) and picked up a couple classics (110, 119 Special) taking advantage of some seasonal sales/deals. Then randomly came across the Huntsman for sale for $20 each, so I bought several of them to give away as gifts.

I haven't owned a SAN since I was a kid, but after purchasing the Huntsmans, it sent me down a rabbit hole where curiosity got the better of me. I ended up purchasing several for myself...Spartan, Tinker (same as the Spartan, but with a Phillips instead of the corkscrew), Sportsman, Compact, and a Pioneer X.

I plan on throwing the Huntsman in my pack for hikes and camping, and then having fun with the others changing it up and using them as EDC tools just to keep in my pocket (which is why most of the ones I chose are 2-layer tools). One thing I have found is there aren't many full-size (91mm), 2-layer tools that have the full-size scissors and a full size knife. The Compact and the Pioneer X are the only two that immediately come to mind, but I'm still very new at this, so I'm probably forgetting a model or two. I did come across an older and out of production model that seems pretty ideal for what I want called the Golfer. I also prefer the corkscrew over Phillips driver (I realize I'm probably in the minority regarding the corkscrew!)

My brain hurts a bit from all of the comparing and contrasting models over the last week. All this "research" led me to a few popular Youtube channels showing all the different uses of SAN's for bush crafting and camping. TA Outdoors and Felix Immler being a few that have stood out.

I do feel a bit guilty for going a bit off the deep end buying so many of these over the last week, but I do plan on giving several of them away as gifts for the holidays, and keeping a couple around for impromptu gifts is always a great idea. I mean, who wouldn't want to receive a SAN as a gift, right?

I haven't even received all the knives yet, but will take some photos once they all arrive over the next week or two. Don't get too excited though! I ordered everything in red Cellidor except for the Pioneer X, which is in silver Alox. Maybe down the line I'll modify some of them by adding the plus scales and get them in different colors, but for now I'm all about the classic red, since I'm a sucker for old school, classic looks (which also explains the Buck knives!)

This site seems to be a great resource and it's came up frequently when I was doing searches comparing different models and asking questions, etc., so I figured I'd join and hopefully someday will be able to contribute as well.

Welcome aboard, Doc!

For 2-layer 91mm SAKs with both main blade and scissors, the Compact is really it for current production, though a few variations can be modded.  Essentially, the way Victorinox builds layers, there are only certain tool options that (readily) fit with others on the same back spring.  For this case, one layer must be a main blade layer (which consists of large blade, either small blade or combo tool, and either corkscrew or back side Philips), and the other layer must be the scissors layer (which consists of scissors, and hook on the back side).

The Pioneer X is actually a 3-layer 93mm.  About the same thickness as a 2-layer 91mm, but noticeably heavier.

Thanks for the clarification!

I forgot the Pioneer X is a 3-layer, and now remember it wasn't much thicker than a Compact because of the slimmer Alox scales. It is quite a bit heavier though.

Welcome, Doc! I’ve come to realise that the ideal SAK doesn’t exist because needs change and so do my opinions - you’ll know when you are truly afflicted when you start modding to create the ideal SAK!

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on the common sense to concentrate on two and three layer models. There are not so many of those around and they are not too expensive either (except for the small Cyber Tool), so your wallet should be ok (as long as you don't start collecting vintage or discontinued models).

Welcome aboard, Doc! As Rizio said, needs change right along with tastes. Therefore, there is no ideal Swiss Army knife, but instead several Swiss Army knives that can handle anything you might throw at them.

On the 91mm Golfer: it might be worth searching for one at a reasonable price. However, I have no idea exactly how rare they are. If you have to have that tool load in a hurry, a new Compact is probably the best way to go.

I really like scissors on a medium or large SAK for EDC. Years ago I carried a little Classic with me on a 250 miles hike when I did half the Colorado Trail. My gear weighed under 10 lbs. total, and I was going as light as possible. That little Classic served me well, and I used the scissors all the time. I'm waiting for the Compact to arrive, but also think adding a little Classic into my watch/coin pocket or on my keychain for then I carry something without scissors.

Welcome to the forum!

If you haven't found it yet, SAKWiki.com is a great resource for info on different models.

A lot of people carry a couple of SAKs, like a small 58mm on their key ring and a larger 91mm, to get the combination of tools that suit them best for day-to-day use.

Part of the fun of SAKs is figuring out what works for you.

Then you realize your ideal isn't already made, which leads to modding and that's a whole different rabbit hole to go down...

SAKs:
58mm: Bijou (3), Classic SD (7), Mini Champ Plus (mod), Alox Classic SD, Rambler (3), Companion
65mm: Wenger Esquire
74mm: Executive (2)
85mm: Traveler, Delemont S10, Bass
91mm: Champion "c", Swiss Champ (4), Explorer (3), Deluxe Tinker, Huntsman, Serrated Spartan/Weekender, Explorer Plus, Deluxe Explorer Plus (mod), Outdoorsman Plus, Champion "a", Champion Plus, Timekeeper Alarm, Golfer
93mm: Pioneer Alox

Welcome Dr.B!

Sounds like you should look into 84mm 2-layer knives with scissors. As you mentioned already, the Golfer(s) so many and the Wiki is far from complete regarding those…but there’s also the ‘Voyageur’ in Alox scales…and the ‘Bantam X’ mods.

Your story has a familiar ring to it!  :)

I don't think I'll be picking up a vintage Voyageur any time soon. A bit too spendy for me! I wonder why Victorinox doesn't make something like that anymore or reissue it?

I’m hoping they can get back to making them…but modding is always an option in the mean time. 74mm and 91mm scissors can be made to fit the frame.

I hope they can see the instant appeal to anyone looking for a slim knife with lots of utility.

Lots of people do just that. I prefer to carry my 58mm knives on a neck lanyard, though.

I'm wondering if this is how most end up after they get into SAK's.

At first it was about finding one SAK that suited my wants/needs for EDC, taking into consideration features, size, availability, price, etc. This sends you down an endless rabbit hole an you quickly realize there isn't just ONE that will achieve this. So you decide on a model, order it, and in the meantime start looking at other versions and thinking, "Yeah, it would be cool to have that one. Oh, they also make a similar version in 84mm? Gotta try that out. Hmmmm, never thought that particular tool would be useful, and the two I currently have don't have that feature..." So it then turns into three SAK's. Then you're up late and think, "All my SAK's are Cellidor, and the Aloe looks pretty darn nice." Next thing you know you have an Aloe on the way.

Then you're up late and still thinking of the perfect SAK for each situation..."That Huntsman would be the best SAK for hiking and camping and I would only be better if it had plus scales..." So you then end up ordering som plus scales.

Then I realized, there really is no single perfect SAK. It's all about the variety and enjoying the different versions and sizes and trying something different every day, or every week and just enjoying them all.

You need to try as many different models and sizes as you can get until you find the right combination of size and tool load.  Once you have found what works for you you should never look back.  Just buy a couple of spares so you'll never have to be without it again, and get rid of all the others that are taking up space by sending them to me.  I'll even pay the shipping.  :2tu:
