One thing I have found is there aren't many full-size (91mm), 2-layer tools that have the full-size scissors and a full size knife. The Compact and the Pioneer X are the only two that immediately come to mind, but I'm still very new at this, so I'm probably forgetting a model or two. I did come across an older and out of production model that seems pretty ideal for what I want called the Golfer. I also prefer the corkscrew over Phillips driver (I realize I'm probably in the minority regarding the corkscrew!)
Welcome aboard, Doc! For 2-layer 91mm SAKs with both main blade and scissors, the Compact is really it for current production, though a few variations can be modded. Essentially, the way Victorinox builds layers, there are only certain tool options that (readily) fit with others on the same back spring. For this case, one layer must be a main blade layer (which consists of large blade, either small blade or combo tool, and either corkscrew or back side Philips), and the other layer must be the scissors layer (which consists of scissors, and hook on the back side). The Pioneer X is actually a 3-layer 93mm. About the same thickness as a 2-layer 91mm, but noticeably heavier.
Recently went on a little bit of a Buck knife spree (I know this is the SAN section...I'll get to that shortly!) and picked up a couple classics (110, 119 Special) taking advantage of some seasonal sales/deals. Then randomly came across the Huntsman for sale for $20 each, so I bought several of them to give away as gifts. I haven't owned a SAN since I was a kid, but after purchasing the Huntsmans, it sent me down a rabbit hole where curiosity got the better of me. I ended up purchasing several for myself...Spartan, Tinker (same as the Spartan, but with a Phillips instead of the corkscrew), Sportsman, Compact, and a Pioneer X. I plan on throwing the Huntsman in my pack for hikes and camping, and then having fun with the others changing it up and using them as EDC tools just to keep in my pocket (which is why most of the ones I chose are 2-layer tools). One thing I have found is there aren't many full-size (91mm), 2-layer tools that have the full-size scissors and a full size knife. I also prefer the corkscrew over Phillips driver (I realize I'm probably in the minority regarding the corkscrew!)My brain hurts a bit from all of the comparing and contrasting models over the last week. All this "research" led me to a few popular Youtube channels showing all the different uses of SAN's for bush crafting and camping. TA Outdoors and Felix Immler being a few that have stood out. I do feel a bit guilty for going a bit off the deep end buying so many of these over the last week, but I do plan on giving several of them away as gifts for the holidays, and keeping a couple around for impromptu gifts is always a great idea. I mean, who wouldn't want to receive a SAN as a gift, right?I haven't even received all the knives yet, but will take some photos once they all arrive over the next week or two. Don't get too excited though! I ordered everything in red Cellidor except for the Pioneer X, which is in silver Alox. Maybe down the line I'll modify some of them by adding the plus scales and get them in different colors, but for now I'm all about the classic red, since I'm a sucker for old school, classic looks (which also explains the Buck knives!)This site seems to be a great resource and it's came up frequently when I was doing searches comparing different models and asking questions, etc., so I figured I'd join and hopefully someday will be able to contribute as well.
Welcome aboard, Doc! As Rizio said, needs change right along with tastes. Therefore, there is no ideal Swiss Army knife, but instead several Swiss Army knives that can handle anything you might throw at them.On the 91mm Golfer: it might be worth searching for one at a reasonable price. However, I have no idea exactly how rare they are. If you have to have that tool load in a hurry, a new Compact is probably the best way to go.
Welcome Dr.B!Sounds like you should look into 84mm 2-layer knives with scissors. As you mentioned already, the Golfer(s) so many and the Wiki is far from complete regarding those…but there’s also the ‘Voyageur’ in Alox scales…and the ‘Bantam X’ mods. Your story has a familiar ring to it!
I don't think I'll be picking up a vintage Voyageur any time soon. A bit too spendy for me! I wonder why Victorinox doesn't make something like that anymore or reissue it?
...adding a little Classic into my watch/coin pocket or on my keychain...
It's all about the variety and enjoying the different versions and sizes and trying something different every day, or every week and just enjoying them all.
You need to try as many different models and sizes as you can get until you find the right combination of size and tool load. Once you have found what works for you you should never look back. Just buy a couple of spares so you'll never have to be without it again, and get rid of all the others that are taking up space by sending them to me. I'll even pay the shipping.
