Best SAKs in different categories
on: December 20, 2021, 05:16:35 AM
I used search and didn't find a topic like this, so I guess I i'll leave you the question.
In the following categories, what are the saks that you guys think are the best:

1) Around the house
2) Work (blue collar)
3) Work (office like)
4) Outdoors (hiking etc.)
5) Dressy like events (like the knife you would carry in your pocket at your wedding)

Hope you guys enjoy making the list...
From a limited point of view (didnt use many SAKs)
1) Spartan Lite
2) Handyman
3) Compact
4) Hunstman
5) Pioneer

Interesting topic, I myself tend to think of myself as a creature of habits, and usually just carry my Mountaineer all year around (especially when I am not in a challenge).

Occasionally, I'd add in a Spirit if I need to do some home improvement, a Swisschamp when I am travelling aboard, or a OH Trekker when I go outdoor.

If you like having something that can cope with most of what you'll encounter in all five of those environments, then the SwissChamp or WorkChamp are the only answers, depending on your size preferences.
If you want something a bit more pocket-friendly, then the Ranger is about the most comprehensive bang for buck.

Where it gets interesting is if you're trying to limit it to just those few tools that get used most often and having absolutely nothing else...

1) Handyman, unless you happen to have a toolkit within arms' reach at all times, in which case take your pick.
2) SwissChamp
3) Executive, or absolutely no knife at all and just MacGyver your way through the day.
4) Huntsman or Ranger, depending on how involved you get.
5) Again, take your pick based on what you'll possibly encounter. The weirdest stuff needs sorting at weddings, so I had my Ranger but could easily have carried a SwissChamp without upsetting my tailor. Others may prefer something thinner and lighter.

1. Climber, Super Tinker, Explorer

2. For blue collar work, I would say probably one of the 111mm locking blade SAKs. Or a Leatherman!

3. Explorer for the magnifying glass for reading small print on diagrams in the office.

4. SwissChamp, Handyman, Ranger, Huntsman, or Fieldmaster (mainly for the wood saw and scissors).

5. Pioneer, Cadet, Compact, Tinker, Spartan (I had one in my pocket at college graduation). Or, if you’re in to smaller knives, any of the 58-74mm models.

My current default EDC SAK is an Explorer plus.
Current SAKs: Explorer, SwissChamp, Handyman (modded), Climber, Super Tinker, Tinker, Woodsman (modded), Electrician, Pioneer, SwissTool, Executive, Ambassador, Champion Plus
Current Leatherman tools: PST, Original Wave, Wave, Wave+, Blast, Bond, Curl, Style PS, Micra

I really like threads like this .  Well, I like seeing what others say.

1) Around the house.  Champion.
2) Work (blue collar).  Cyclist.  formerly a Champion.
3) Work (office like).  No office work for me.  Midnite Manager is always with me.
4) Outdoors (hiking etc.).  Have a Huntsman in my pack full time.  I also have a Swisschamp in another pack.
5) Dressy like events.  Wenger Security 14.

Depending on whether or not you want scissors in your discreet SAK, I would say just three SAKs will cover all your bases: Compact/Cadet, Cybertool 34 and Swisschamp.

My take on this may be a little different. Here goes:

Around the house: any of my carriers/users that is up to the job.

Work (blue collar): a Super Tinker served me well in that environment for a number of years.

Work (office like): I'm not an office-worker type, so I'm not well-qualified to answer this one. Maybe a Bantam?

Outdoors (hiking etc.): Depends on what I'm doing. If I'm fishing, a Fisherman or an Angler would get the job done. For camping and working in the yard, any model with a wood saw (Camper, Hiker, Huntsman, or Fieldmaster). Or a SwissChamp that packs all the desirable tools for outdoors use.

Dressy like events (like the knife you would carry in your pocket at your wedding): an Alox or wood Classic SD. Or, if one wants to get really fancy, a silver (the material, not the color) Classic SD.
USN 2000-2006

Culling of the knife and multi herds in progress...

If I pay five figures for something, it better have wings or a foundation!

For me the answer to 1-5 could be Swisschamp,  :dunno: but if I needed a second choice

1. Huntsman
2. Workchamp
3. Pioneer X
4. Farmer
5. Pioneer

Great question!

1) Around the house
I grab what I need from EDC pile or usually keep knives mostly where I use them. I suppose it means I don’t put my most used knives away at all.
2) Work (blue collar)
Pliers based tool or Workchamp or older Champion
3) Work (office like)
CT34 or Champ
4) Outdoors (hiking etc.)
Workchamp (camping) or Camper (hiking)
5) Dressy like events
Money clip, Executive or Executive money clip mod.

I carry the same kit all the time when not in a challenge. In a leather pocket sheath in my back pocket you will find a Swiss Champ and a Spirit.  Any other knives I may carry such as the Myerchin rigging knife in the second picture are in addition to rather than instead of my usual EDC.  When you find what works for you everything else is second choice and I generally don't do second choice except in challenges or a very rare occasion when I may feel like carrying something different.

Unless I'm doing a challenge, it's a Swiss Champ and Mini Champ. If the clothing is dressy enough that the Swiss Champ really doesn't fit in, then it's just the Mini Champ plus a SeberTool M2 for mini-pliers.
SAKs:
58mm: Bijou (3), Classic SD (7), Mini Champ Plus (mod), Alox Classic SD, Rambler (3), Companion
65mm: Wenger Esquire
74mm: Executive (2)
85mm: Traveler, Delemont S10, Bass
91mm: Champion "c", Swiss Champ (4), Explorer (3), Deluxe Tinker, Huntsman, Serrated Spartan/Weekender, Explorer Plus, Deluxe Explorer Plus (mod), Outdoorsman Plus, Champion "a", Champion Plus, Timekeeper Alarm, Golfer
93mm: Pioneer Alox

1) Tinker
2) OHO Trekker
3) Deluxe Tinker or Cybertool M
4) Depends on your view of Outdoors: Backpacking (in the nature): go small, go Huntsman, on a Walk: Outrider
5) Wenger SI.

Alltogether I rate the Tinker-Family perfect for urban duties.
When outside and weight is no issue the 111mm familiy is hard to beat.

I see that people in this forum really really like the swisschamp...
I still resist to its charms... Maybe one day.
I dont see a point of carrying such a larger tool, when one can carry a Swisstool or Spirit, that seem much more handy.

Well, for one multitools with locking blades are illegal to carry in various countries. Furthermore, if pliers (or a locking blade) are not a priority, the Swisschamp is a handier tool in every respect (at least in my opinion). I for one own a Leatherman Wave as well as a Vic Spirit and never really use any of them, whereas I frequently carry my Swisschamp or Cybertool Large when traveling or hiking (or at least I did in pre-Corona times). Also, the Swisschamp is relatively cheap when compared to decent pliers-based multitools.

Yes, one always forget about the legal implications.

Still, Swisschamp seems so large... But I actualy never had one, so Idk.
Craftsman sounds better, but its harder to find.
(Or maybe Ranger with 1/4 bit adapter in the caplifter ahah)

I think the problem with the Swiss Champ is people always say it's too big for a jeans pocket, which is pretty much is. It kind of falls into the same size category as a Leatherman or Gerber multitool in regards to size, and most would never consider carrying those around in a front pant's pocket like many of us do with smaller SAK's. But because the Swiss Champ is a SAK they automatically assign it to a pants pocket and then say it's too big. Just like the Leatherman multi-tools, the Swiss Champ probably is better suited for carrying it on your belt, and not in a pocket.

I just picked up a Swiss Champ for the first time and think it's best suited (for me at least) as a tool to keep on my desk for using it around the house.

With the Swisschamp I use a Zermatt belt pouch or pocket carry with a suspension clip. It's really easy to carry in jean pocket with the clip. Without the clip it's pretty heavy in the bottom of the pocket. Amazing the difference in feel!

Jmoita - Just buy one of each and then decide for yourself! :p

Regarding the larger SAKs, I found using pocket hanger clips keeps them in a good place and out the way of your hand without cluttering up the bottom of your pocket, to the point where you don't even notice the weight.
