Any idea what the significance of the serial number Z3A1 / 0311 is?

It's shown on the website pictures for the Mr Crunch, Europe75, and 40th Anniversary models.

Edit - after a quick check, all five tools have the same four digits at the end of their unique serial numbers.

I thought they might have been hex values but then that would mean they’d made significantly more than they’re allegedly were…. unless they skip certain number ranges.

From everything I’ve seen online, the first part identified the year and batch number, the last four digits are the unique serial number for each tool.

Z is 0, A is 1, B is 2, etc.

Mine is 0976.

If I'm deciphering the Da Vinci code correctly, mine is in the 200 range.

Can honestly say this Leatherman 40th Anniversary Garage #5's Can Opener has a seriously poor design. Took me 5 times as long to open a can of tuna that it would of been with a Victorinox Spirit. Can got bent out of shape, could not maintain a constant grasp on the can lip, and failed to keep the cut inline. The cut is smaller than that of a Spirit SwissTool in comparison.

G #5's can opener is far too short to be useful. It could of easily been made longer as there was plenty of room in the handle. Longer Can Opener would mean more area to use and work the tool implement. Instead the opener is too short for its placement and size of the multitool. Definitely NOT impressed.

For a 40th Anniversary Multitool, Leatherman failed on their push-type can opener. Victorinox Spirit clearly wins in the can opener test. Look at the length of the tool when deployed. Leatherman's Can Opener is too short. Do they not test these before manufacture?

I think they did not expect anyone to actually use a $900 MT.

Huh? $300 (tax + shipping)
People don’t buy higher end things and not use them??

Wonder if a Spirit Can Opener can fit in its place? Bought a few spares sone time back to replace some can openers with them.

My late father would say a tool is for using - though I must admit I’m hesitant with this one  :D

The Free P4 also has the same can opener design I believe, so presume that one’s no good as well.

Some folks really like the can opener though and if the world goes to pot then we’d all need probably be glad of one! But yeah they need to make it functional.

I’m considering trying to get hold of a P4 serrated blade for mine in place of the scissors.. or seeing if I can swap it out for ZapWizard’s t-shank holder. If it needs more space then the can opener will have to go.

I know people live a can opener but I wished it wasn't on nearly every single tool that comes out :ahhh

I do have more than a few tools with them anyways  :D

If they’re moving the bottle opener to the package opener / screw driver tool, and made the can opener now stand alone I wonder if LM are thinking of replacing it.. Certainly makes it easier to swap it out with something else.

Even if I needed a can opener, I wouldn't use a can opener on a tool I use for non-food uses unless the can was also not food.

Huh? $300 (tax + shipping)  People don’t buy higher end things and not use them?

You could sell it for $1,000, and people generally don't use $1,000 MTs - especially when they don't do anything that a $149 MT can't do.  Its relative scarcity and collectability - not its utility - make it valuable. That was my brilliant and unassailable thesis.

I personally like having a can opener, but there's no reason anyone should be putting them on tools only as a can opener. Victorinox (and a few other companies) has been putting a screw driver on there since before most of us were born.   Then they came out with the combo tool, which I don't love, but is at least an efficient use of space. The PST (you know, the one this is 40th anniversarying, Leatherman?) had a can/bottle combo 40 years ago. Then they put a wire stipper on it! A lot of people are loving the old "claw" style openers as package openers for clamshells and tape/cardboard boxes. I like having a can opener on my tools, but that's because it's (usually) a can opener and 2 or 3 other things. They're the multitool's multitool!

Oh and I’m assuming they’ll stay with the Free design purely as it’s still under patent and stops (in theory) clones.

Doubt we will see a new design until that patent expires.

Agree, but the tool selection on the P2/P4 is terrible.  It's like Leatherman has learned nothing in the past 40 years and went back to the equivalent of the original PST tools.  Actually, even the PST had better tools than the P2/P4 (IMHO/YMMV).

I saw a couple of these on Ebay had bids in the $900 to $1k range.  :ahhh

Actual clinical insanity...

Can honestly say this Leatherman 40th Anniversary Garage #5's Can Opener has a seriously poor design.

Just pass me a P38, please.

I think this might be the best Leatherman ever. Its so smooth, great load out, and a really polished multitool. The cerakote feels fantastic in hand as well. I didn't think I'd ever love something more than the Mr. Crunch or Flair, but I think I do.

Agree with this, though mine was quite tight out of the box.  I backed the pliers-end pivots off about 1/4 turn, which was a big improvement.
